À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ's Academic Leadership Academy, offered every Spring, is an in-person intensive retreat for academic leaders. Intended primarily for department chairs, school directors, associate chairs/directors and associate deans, the Academy provides highly engaging executive education and opportunities for interaction with colleagues from across campus.

À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµâ€™s Academic Leadership Academy is part of the focus on leadership development that was recommended by the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Building a Resilient University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ, along with the Academic Leadership Program (ALP) administered through the Office of the Associate Academic Vice President. The curriculum is developed and facilitated by Mark Weber, Special Advisor to the Provost on Leadership Strategy and Development, with Martin Cooke, Assistant Vice President, Academic Leadership and Strategic Initiatives.

Why participate?

This in-person, intensive retreat provides participants with case-based scenarios and real-time, practical application of knowledge and skills. Primarily aimed at developing knowledge, skills, and relationships among À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ leaders to create a culture of effective leadership at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ.

The topics were all extremely relevant to our situations. The instructors are excellent and have a lot of direct experience with the topic. Despite being a centrally organized event, the workshop is very successful at addressing the individual concerns and needs of each participant.

The Academy provided practical tools to guide decision-making and negotiations. It provided a framework to guide our priorities (e.g., the importance of framing reality) and the importance of leading by example. On a more personal note, the Academy also provided me with a clearer framework for understanding the qualities I valued from Chairs and how I could better emulate those values and characteristics in my work.

This was a great opportunity to connect and learn from facilitators and from the other participants. I have had follow-up connections with about 5 people from the session all related to different aspects of my job. Just an excellent session.
