Navigating Your PhD

Join WiM for a 2-day hands-on workshop for women in math who are pursuing a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) to get better prepared for a successful completion of the program as well as receive guidance and mentorship with regards to career opportunities post-graduation! Our aim is to create a comfortable space that is conducive for healthy discussions and reflections as well as to promote interaction between peers within the Faculty of Mathematics.

Register here before March 23. Please note that attendance is limited to 30 participants in total. Registered participants on a waitlist will be informed if a spot opens up.

Event Description

Celebrate International Women's Day by joining Women in Math (WiM) and Women in Computer Science (WiCS) for a fun game night to learn poker with the UW Poker Club and chess with the UW Chess Club!

Did you know only about 5% of professional poker players and 15% of all the licensed chess players are women? We are working to decrease these gaps by creating a safe and encouraging environment for all levels to learn. Learn how to apply skills used in these games such as confidence, calculated risk-taking, and critical thinking to the real world.

Come out on March 8th from 4:00-6:00 pm to Up Your Game in poker and chess. All levels are welcome! The event is open to all genders, faculty, students, staff, postdocs and other members of the university. The event will take place in the MC 5501.

COMING THIS FALL

We are excited to announce Terminal Live @ ��ݮ��Ƶ, a $25,000 coding competition for talented undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students.

Terminal is a novel games-based AI challenge, where players code strategies to automate gameplay, battling team vs team for prize money and job opportunities. Check out this brief clip to see Terminal in action! Event Highlights include:

$25,000 in cash prizes!
Opportunity to showcase your coding skills in a novel competition!
Consideration for interviews with Citadel and Citadel Securities!

Terminal Live @ UIUC is hosted by Citadel LLC & Citadel Securities in partnership with Correlation One.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 28th from 10am-6pm, and food and beverage will be served.

Player one, are you ready to compete in a day of fun puzzle competitions? Is your team ready to take on the challenge, win prizes, and have fun? If you’re ready, we invite you to register for Google’s Tech Challenge ��ݮ��Ƶtaking place on Saturday, April 13th.

What is Tech Challenge?

The Tech Challenge, formerly known as Google Games, is an annual day-long event where teams of five compete against other students from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ and University of Toronto. What started in Mountain View more than 10 years ago has now grown to 14 locations across North America. The theme for our 2019 Tech Challenge is “Video Games.” We’ll have numerous mini-games and challenges inspired by iconic video games that will test your brains and creativity, as you play for the title of the Tech Challenge Champions!

Here’s what you’ll need to do by April 1st:

Assemble a team of five first, second, or third year undergraduate students from your school (having a computer science background is strongly recommended).
Pick a team name and register here (each team member must register individually).

FAQs:

Q. Can we have fewer than five members on our team?

We strongly recommend having the maximum number of members — any less and you'll lose your competitive edge.

Q. Do you have to be a current student to participate?

You must be a first, second, or third-year undergraduate student currently enrolled at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ or theUniversity of Toronto. Seniors and graduate students are not eligible to participate.

Q. Can we replace a member before the start of the event?

Absolutely! Just email us at techchallenge@google.com. Be sure to include: the full name and email of the new team member, the full name of who is being replaced, your school name, and your team name.

Q. Should our team wear costumes?

Show your team's spirit however you choose: costumes, uniforms, team dance, team flag or poster, cheer, fight song, etc. A prize will be awarded to the team with the most spirit.

Q. Will food be provided?

We will provide a light breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. If you have any dietary restrictions, please note this in the registration form and we will be sure to accommodate you.

Q. When will our team receive a confirmation about the Tech Challenge?

After the registration deadline, we will reach out to confirm team selection and provide more details. Not all registered teams will be selected due to space limitations.

Q. Do I need to bring my own laptop?

It will give your team a competitive advantage to have all members work from their own laptop in the challenges. If you don’t have your own, either try and borrow one from a friend, or borrow one from us, as we’ll have a limited number of loaners for the event. And don’t forget the charger!

Pecha Kucha Plus presented by Math #HeForShe

Japanese for chit-chat, Pecha Kuchas (pronounced pe-chak-cha) are designed to inspire. Students will have a chance to hear from working alumnae about “the best piece of advice that they wished they had received”. The “plus” will be a lively panel at the end moderated by Chair of the Faculty’s HeForShe committee, Raouf Boutaba. Light refreshments provided. ALL STUDENTS WELCOME!

TECH BUBBLE
Networking Café presented by Women in Computer Science (WiCS)
Time: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Students will have the opportunity to sip bubble tea in a casual café and ask alumnae working in the local tech scene “anything”. Light refreshments provided. Female-identifying students welcome.

Join us on Thursday, March 14th for the WiCS/HeForShe Sexism Response Workshop.

This workshop is for students to learn how to respond wittily, constructively, and effectively when they hear a sexist comment — whether the comment is directed at them or they are a bystander. We teach them some everyday strategies, and practice employing those strategies in a game of responding to scenarios.

Complimentary pizza and sweets will be provided. This event is open to all students

The workshop focuses on strategies for responding constructively to micro aggressions and biases. If you’ve ever been told that you only got into your program "because you're a girl”, or you’re sick of being called the "diversity hire" without a witty retort in mind, this workshop is for you! We’ll be covering response strategies that you can use every day -- whether you are the target of a sexist comment or a bystander. This will be an interactive workshop, with lots of group discussion of different scenarios in different contexts.

Please register if you are plan to attend, but only if you are planning to attend (so that we have accurate attendance numbers). The event is not capped, so there is no need to register just to secure a spot.
