This event is open to all students and other members of the faculty of mathematics and their friends.Ìý

Abstract

The Riemann zeta function playsÌýaÌýcentral role in our understanding of prime numbers. In this talk, we will review some of its amazing properties as well as properties of other similarÌýfunctions, the DirichletÌýL-functions. We will then see how the method of moments can help us in the study ofÌýL-functionsÌýand some surprising properties of theirÌývalues. Finally, we will present some recent results aboutÌýL-functionsÌýassociatedÌýwithÌýcubic characters.Ìý

Biography

Matilde Lalín received her PhD in 2005 from the University of Texas at Austin and is currentlyÌýaÌýprofessor at the Université de Montréal and the Vice-President Quebec of the CMS. She is involvedÌýwithÌýseveral initiatives whose aim is to encourage the participation of women and members of underrepresented groups in mathematics,Ìýincluding the Committees for Women in Mathematics of the CMS and of the IMU and the Women in Numbers Network. Her research interests lie in Number Theory and related areas and they includeÌýL-functions, Mahler measure, and arithmetic statistics over function fields, and she has written more than 60 articles on these topics. She received the 2022 Krieger-Nelson prize from the CMSÌýand has been recently named Fellow of bothÌýthe AMS and the CMS.
