Please join us in-person or on Zoom for a discussi on on Europe’s\nOffshore wind energy sector. Europe is committed to an a mbitious\nenergy transition\, aiming to become the world's first climate-n eutral\ncontinent by 2050. Offshore wind energy and HVDC technology are\np ivotal to achieving this goal. In this presentation\, the\nstate-of-the-ar t of HVDC and offshore wind in Europe will be\npresented. Specifically\, t he driving forces\, electrical design\, and\ntechnical challenges of build ing the Danish Offshore Energy Islands\nwill be discussed.\n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3be73a DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20241111T133000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20241111T143000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-5 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nWISE is pleased to announce a hybrid WISE Public Le cture with Jean\nRoy\, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer\ , Kruger\nEnergy.\n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3bef7f DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20240909T133000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20240909T143000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-4 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nPatricia Romero-Lankao\, a Professor from the Unive rsity of Toronto\nwill be giving the public lecture on Creating a Network for Equity in\nEnergy Sustainability Transitions.\n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3bf776 DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20240813T133000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20240813T143000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-3 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nWISE is pleased to announce the public lecture by J ohn Avdoulos. Join\nus for a discussion on building a clean\, affordable\, and reliable\nelectricity system. With the decarbonization efforts and gr owth in\neconomic development\, increased electrification is forecasted to \ndouble in the next 20 years.  The problem has been defined as costing\n $500 billion in electricity infrastructure needs\, but it can be\naccelera ted through innovation and technology.  Data\, AI\, modeling\,\nand distr ibuted energy resources are key components to solving the\nproblem. The Es sex Power PowerShare DSO initiative is moving the\nindustry forward to dep loy technologies to enable DER’s at a faster\npace. \n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3bff5f DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20240801T150000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20240801T160000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-2 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nWISE Public Lecture\n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3c0683 DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20240801T140000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20240801T150000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-1 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nWISE Public Lecture\n DTSTAMP:20250522T033635Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:682e9bc3c0df6 DTSTART;TZID=America/Toronto:20240717T133000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/Toronto:20240717T143000 URL:/waterloo-institute-sustainable-energy/events/wise- public-lecture-0 SUMMARY:WISE Public Lecture CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nTITLE:\n\nKeep decarbonizing and carry on: what are the GB network stability\nchallenges on our way to net zero?\n\nABSTRACT: \n\nThe Great British electricity sector is rapidly evolving to meet net\n zero requirements. In 2023\, Wind power contributed 29.4% of the UK’s\nt otal electricity generation\, and a peak of 87.6% of the electricity\nwas generated using carbon-free resources. The transition is not free\nfrom ch allenges\, especially regarding stability.  The severity of\nthese challe nges was illustrated on the 9th of August in 2019 when\nareas of England s uffered a blackout partially due to the incorrect\nsetting of power electr onics converters in an offshore wind farm. The\npresentation will explore some of the recent stability events in GB\,\nthe research involved in unde rstanding them better\, and the solutions\nthat have been adopted.\n\nBIO: \n\nAgustí Egea-Alvarez is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the\nElectro nic & Electrical Engineering department and a PEDEC (Power\nElectronics\, Drives and Energy Conversion) group member. Also\, he is\nthe holder of a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship\nwith ScottishPower. He obtained his BSc\, MSc\, and PhD from the\nTechnical University of Catalo nia in Barcelona in 2008\, 2010\, and 2014\nrespectively.  In 2015\, he w as a Marie Curie fellow at the China\nElectric Power Research Institute (C EPRI). In 2016 he joined Siemens\nGamesa as a converter control engineer w orking on grid-forming\ncontrollers and alternative HVDC schemes for offsh ore wind farms.
