Join us for our second annual Bake Your Research Competition!

A culinary competition hosted by the Society of the Water Institute Graduate Students (SWIGS) and the Water Institute. The Rules? To bake or cook an edible masterpiece that visually portrays your research! One entry per lab or research group is recommended.

Guest judges will be in attendance so break out the creativity for what's sure to be a fierce and delicious competition!

Understanding your strengths can help you identify what enables you to perform at your best. Everyone has a unique combination of strengths that shape how we respond to tasks, situations, and challenges. This session uses a strength-based approach to support your personal and professional development. Discover how you can leverage your skills to create innovative solutions for complex water challenges.

In this workshop, you will complete the CliftonStrengths assessment to reveal your personalized 'Top 5 Talent Themes' and understand their impact on you. Through individual reflection, small group activities, and large group discussions, we will explore how to harness your strengths to your advantage, both in your career and personal life.

Learning objectives:

Discover what you naturally do best using your top 5 strengths
Learn how to develop your greatest talents into strengths
Explore the role of strengths in the workplace

The registration deadline for this workshop is February 7 to allow time for participants to complete the CliftonStrengths assessment.

Today, academics are expected to be able to effectively communicate not only with other students and researchers, but also with the intended users of their research. This can be achieved through various written formats such as newsletter articles, editorials, posters, and blogs.

In this session, you will gain practical tips for communicating complex scientific concepts to an informed audience. You will learn how to identify your audience, develop engaging and impactful messages that spark interest and enthusiasm, and use plain language to enhance the accessibility and readability of your work.

Guest speaker:

Emma Dunn, Writing and Communication Advisor, Writing and Communication Centre

Learning objectives:

Learn to write according to your purpose
Identify and learn how to target potential audiences for your message
Craft impactful and interesting messages that will resonate with your audience based on their needs
Avoid elements that reduce clarity (e.g., abstractions, long subjects, using the passive voice, etc.)
Recognize and eliminate jargon and acronyms in your writing
Get tips for effective article writing including how to write catchy headlines, using appropriate tenses, and finishing with a strong conclusion

Whether you’re presenting for a class assignment, at a conference, or during a workshop, you’ll gain the skills to prepare and deliver exceptional presentations.

Apply strategic planning skills: deliver presentations with an intended goal, to a specific audience, based on key messages you want them to hear

In this interactive module, participants will discover what makes them an asset to the water sector, while learning to recognize and appreciate the abilities of others. You will learn to how improve your communication and teambuilding skills through a variety of fun and effective tools that identifies strengths and further develops leadership and innovation competencies.

Learning objectives:

Identify and leverage your individual strengths in a way that can help you reach your full career potential.
Learn strategies for building teams that can help you increase your influence in the water sector.
Learn empathetic leadership skills to be able to recognize and comprehend the needs and emotions of others.
Learn how to productively and intentionally interact and network with people to achieve your strategic goals, gain new insights, and work effectively in teams.

About the guest speaker:

Karen Kun is Director and Co-founder of Waterlution, an internationally recognized water-focused organization offering distinctive capacity building, leadership and facilitation training to spark and mentor innovators and aspiring entrepreneurs in the water and climate change space.

Karen is devoted to advancing social change, systems thinking, and ecological diversity, and one of her greatest passions is encouraging inter-generational learning and transferring knowledge through mentorship opportunities. She has a combined business-environmental background, including a commerce degree from Concordia University specializing in international business and an advanced geography education from York University, with a focus on water and environmental management.

Qualify for the WaterLeadership Certificate

A WaterLeadership certificate of completion will be issued to those who attend all four modules and complete the corresponding assignments. Each assignment is estimated to take between 60-90 minutes to complete. If you are attempting to complete the certificate and are not available to attend one or more of the sessions in-person, please contact Nancy.Goucher@uwaterloo.ca to discuss alternative arrangements.

Students taking Water 602 in Fall 2023 who were present for Nancy Goucher’s guest lecture on September 20, 2023 may be exempt from this module. Contact Nancy.Goucher@uwaterloo.ca for more information.
