New Innovation Research Challenge Seeks Proposals for Novel Applications of BlackBerry Technologies to Advance Progress Against UN Sustainable Development Goals

WATERLOO, ONTARIO��– January 6, 2022��– Building on a partnership spanning over three decades,  (NYSE: BB; TSX: BB) and the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s Water Institute, one of the world’s top water research institutes, today launched a first-of-its-kind innovation research challenge for professors and students.

The Water Innovation Challenge invites new applications of BlackBerry technologies to address water-related challenges, including the cybersecurity of water systems, water emergencies, and Internet of Things (IoT) water management solutions.  

WaterLeadership is a professional development program offered by the Water Institute that helps students and faculty develop applied research impact skills to catalyze knowledge into action.

Curated, developed, and presented by our Knowledge Mobilization Specialist, Nancy Goucher, the training sessions cover a range of topics related to Knowledge Mobilization and leadership development. 

The top companies were selected based on their exceptional performance in innovation, growth, management and societal impact.

Water Institute member Nandita Basu was recently quoted in Health magazine's Mind and Body section. The professor in the Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Civil and Environmental Engineering provided an overview of toxic algal blooms, what promotes their growth and their occurence is seemingly pristine water bodies.

Water Institute member Monica Emelko, Canada Research Chair in , and professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has recently been named section editor for Weather and Climate Change for the new peer-reviewed, open access journal, PLOS Water. 

The , a pan-Canadian collaboration of researchers and industry partners, gathered for their annual general meeting (AGM) to discuss research progress after the fourth year of working together. There was a lot to discuss. Over the course of two days, the Network shared 22 research presentations, 26 student posters, 5 interactive discussions, and one collaborative brainstorming session.

The Water Institute is pleased to announce that two research teams have been awarded funding in the recent 2021 seed grant competition. The Water Institute’s seed grant program was initiated in 2014 to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration, international partnerships, and to encourage the development of research proposals that tackle increasingly complex global water issues.
