About World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated each year on February 2^nd, which marks the day when the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. The Convention is an international government agreement acknowledging the importance of wetlands and plays a central role in the wise use and conservation of these critical ecosystems. The University of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s WWD event will be held in person in the Federation Hall (FED) on Monday, February 3rd, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm EST.

The event will consist of a poster session and reception followed by a distinguished lecture by Dr. Hilary Dugan, entitled:

Calling all water entrepreneurs! AquaHacking is an innovative, multi-stage pitch competition challenging students to tackle water issues facing our Great Lakes. AquaHacking provides mentoring, a unique experience and financial support to help you bring your idea to life!

Join us on Friday, March 1, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in DWE 3518 for food, drinks and information about AquaHacking 2019. Meet previous winners, learn about the competition and this year's format, and meet like-minded individuals.

What is AquaHacking?

Championing clean-tech innovation and entrepreneurship in water through a hacking challenge, AquaHacking is a multi-stage competition that engages the leaders of tomorrow by raising awareness of water issues and fostering their commitment to solving them. AquaHacking provides an exciting space for innovators to experiment, connect, and create solutions for the challenges facing the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.

Join us on April 3, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in RCH 306 for food, drinks and information about AquaHacking 2018. Meet last year's winners, learn about the competition and this year's format, and meet like-minded individuals.

What is AquaHacking?

AquaHacking is a multi-stage hackathon with a focus on developing functional, marketable innovations to address Lake Erie’s water issues. Students with a passion for water, hackers, engineers, and other creative minds are invited to work together in teams over a 10 week period to develop technology that will positively impact Lake Ontario.

AquaHacking provides an exciting space for innovators to experiment, connect, and create solutions for the challenges facing Lake Ontario. Anyone 18 or older is welcome.

There is $50,000 in prize money available, in addition to access to local accelerators and mentors for winning teams.

The annual UN World Water Day in ��ݮ��Ƶ is on March 22, 2017. This year's theme is Nature for Water, exploring how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.

Co-hosted by the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ and Wilfrid Laurier University, this event is a celebration of water which showcases water research at both universities. This year it will be hosted at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. More information can be found at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ World Water Day website.

Public Lecture

Presentation by Dr. Jennifer Read, Water Center Director at the University of Michigan

New this year: Students will be able to promote their work in a non-competitive 3MT presentation. Each participant will have 3 minutes and one static slide to present their work. 3MT presentation slots will be awarded in the order of registration until filled, so please register early to guarantee a slot. Students may sign up for both a 3MT and a poster presentation.

The poster session is open to all researchers. Students may compete in the poster competition for a chance to with a $150 prize (one for a graduate student category and one for undergraduates). The deadline to submit a poster title is January 19th.

Impactful Science Along our Coasts: Supporting and assessing user-focused research in our estuaries, coastal wetlands and Great Lakes

Presented by Dr. Jennifer Read

Estuaries and coastal wetlands along North America’s multiple salt and fresh coasts are highly productive ecosystems with distinct physical and biological attributes. Historic land use patterns and climate change have placed a great deal of pressure on these socioeconomically and biologically productive ecosystems. Effective protection and restoration of these important ecosystems requires carefully constructed science support that brings to bear the highest quality, user-driven research. Over the past six years, the University of Michigan Water Center has taken an adaptive approach to selecting, supporting and assessing projects that engage end-users, or those best positioned to employ the science generated, in project work related to the Great Lakes and broader US coastal ecosystems. This presentation will propose that end-user engaged research, while resource and time intensive, is more effective than traditional or even more recent research paradigms and potentially a better way to invest increasingly scarce public and private resources.

Water Institute member Simron Singh, associate professor in ��ݮ��Ƶ's School of Environment, Enterprise and Development, and his colleagues, are hosting a public panel on sustaining small islands in the context of global environmental change. The panel discussion will be followed by wine and cheese for participants.

Key questions that arise: What are the critical issues that need to be addressed for sustaining small islands in an era of global environmental change? What sustainability pathways exist to build resiliency and reduce island vulnerability?

The Farvolden Lecture Series, hosted by ��ݮ��Ƶ's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, was initiated in 1996 as an annual celebration in honour of Dr. Robert Farvolden. The Lecture Series fosters interaction and communication between the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the alumni of the hydrogeology program and the groundwater community at large.

This year Cathy Ryan, a professor in Geoscience at the University of Calgary who had the privilege of being supervised by Robert Farvolden, will present the 2017 Farvolden Lecture, "Groundwater, Bubbles, and Energy."

The day's celebrations are divided into two parts:

Join us on June 21, from 5-9 p.m. at the Centre for International Governance Innovation as aspiring water entrepreneurs pitch their solutions to problems facing Lake Erie. The five winning teams of the semi-finals will move on to compete in the final competition on September 13, 2017, where there's $75,000 in prize money available, in addition to access to local accelerators and mentors for winning teams.
