Take the challenge

In the spirit of Earth Day (April 22^nd), The Green Labs program invites faculty, students, and staff that work in labs to participate in a friendly campus challenge. Each day will focus on a different theme of Green Labs with various ways to earn points. Your team will have two daily challenges to try!

Participation is asynchronous with 5 full days to complete the challenge. The challenges are designed to be simple and introduce you to the Green Labs Program; they range from subscribing to a newsletter, simple calculations of faucet water usage, and checking for standardized waste signage in your lab.

Location: University of ��ݮ��Ƶ main campus & satellite campuses

How to participate

Please register yourself and/or a team of individuals.
You do not need to be a Green Lab to participate. However, your work must center around a lab to participate.
Once registered, you will be temporarily added to the Green Labs Teams Group, where all challenge correspondence will be centralized.
Daily challenge details will be shared ahead of the event.
Ensure your team details are included in all correspondence with the Sustainability Office so that you get your points.
Teams with the most points will be awarded first, second, and third place prizes!

Rules

The Green Labs Earth Week Challenge will begin on April 22, 2024 and end on April 26, 2024. No purchase is necessary to participate. The Challenge is open to students and employees of the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ who have reached the age of majority. Participants may enter as individuals or in groups of two to five people. By participating in this Challenge, participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules.

Each day of the Challenge, there will be two “daily challenges”. Each daily challenge will require participants (whether individuals or groups) to perform certain activities. These activities will be described in emails sent to registered participants. Participants will be awarded points for successfully completing a daily challenge. Daily challenges must be completed by April 26, 2024, at 5 p.m. to receive points. Proof of completing of a daily challenge must be sent to alyssa.ford@uwaterloo.ca.

There are three prizes available to be won: (1) one $100 gift card for one of: Four All ice cream, Full Circle Foods, or Crafty Ramen; (2) one $50 gift card for one of: Four All ice cream, Full Circle Foods, or Crafty Ramen; and (3) one $25 gift card for one of: Four All ice cream, Full Circle Foods, or Crafty Ramen (each a “Prize”). Prizes will be awarded based on the number of points accumulated by a participant or group of participants by April 26, 2024 at 5 p.m. For clarity, only one Prize will be allocated to share amongst a group of participants. Chances of winning the Prize depend on the number of points achieved by participants and the number of overall participants.

A marathon of three movies will take place as a way to celebrate Earth Day and raise awareness on the issues relating to climate change. Whether there is a film you've been dying to see or just want a break from exams, join us in EV3 1408 for some fun!

12:45PM - 2:25PM	WALL-E An Oscar winning film about he distant future, where a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.
2:30PM - 4:00PM	Weather Gone Wild A CBC documentary which explores recent extreme weather events and the scientific projections of what we can expect over the next few decades. It features the Faculty’s own Dr. Blair Feltmate who will be making a appearance at the screening to say a few words about the film.

Our second movie will be the Oscar nominated documentary Chasing Ice, which follows National Geographic photographer James Balog across the Arctic as he deploys time-lapse cameras designed for one purpose: to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers.

Our first movie will be The Day After Tomorrow, a movie about a paleoclimatologist who must make a daring trek across America to reach his son, trapped in the cross-hairs of a sudden international storm which plunges the planet into a new Ice Age.

Community Cleanup

Looking for a mid-day break? Join the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ on April 21st to give our natural areas north of campus a little makeover. We will take a walk along the Laurel Trail, pick up garbage from a "litter hot spot" around Old Albert Park, and have a light lunch when we get back.

Meeting Area: Meet at the Kent Room in East Campus 3 to pick up gloves, garbage bags, and instructions. We'll meet back here for food after!

Rain Date: In the event of inclement weather, the event rain date will be Thursday, April 23rd at the same time and location.

Registration: Please confirm your attendance so we know how much food to order!
