Climate change is the pre-eminent global issue of our time, yet many of us still struggle to find the right language, time and place to talk about it. Beyond Crisis is a 1-hour film that models a constructive dialogue on climate change, with over 50 diverse voices spread over 5 chapters. Drawing from the major themes presented in the film, this workshop will focus on techniques for hosting meaningful dialogues and deepening engagement in these areas. Short clips from the film will be presented, followed by engaging activities for us to reflect and share knowledge and experiences, opening ourselves to greater transformative discourse around climate.

BIOGRAPHY

Kai is a documentary and social change filmmaker, experienced in end-to-end video storytelling and creation, co-founder of the multimedia company Better Creative. Beyond Crisis is his first feature-length film, as a powerful story for new & transformative discourse around global climate change.

Kai is a graduate of the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ's Master of Climate Change (MCC) program and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a focus on film and video, through NSCAD University. Production credits include short works for social change groups such as 350.org, Swarm, Climate Matters, the Climate Emergency Institute and the Goenchi Mati Movement among others.

Each talk will be presented by a local member of the community who is involved in sustainability whether it's head-on or behind-the-scenes. Each talk is 1 hour long with a presentation or workshop and Q & A at the end. You will have the opportunity to network and engage with the speaker throughout their talk - ask any questions you have on their experiences and passions.

The SCI Talks are going to be held on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM at EV3-4408 from October 5 to November 9 (excluding October 12). Every time you attend a SCI Talk you have a higher chance of winning in our Weekly Draw.

What is ��ݮ��Ƶ doing to improve sustainability on campus? What role can students and employees play? Join Mat Thijssen and Sustainable Campus Initiative for a discussion about ��ݮ��Ƶ’s 2016 annual Sustainability Report and the directions of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s first-ever Environmental Sustainability Strategy. The talk will be hosted by Mat Thijssen, the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s Sustainability Coordinator, who leads institutional environmental sustainability efforts across campus.

BIOGRAPHY

Mat Thijssen coordinates the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ's sustainability activities and efforts, in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders on and off campus. He also provides support to the President's Advisory Committee onEnvironmental Sustainability. Prior to joining the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, Mat worked for three years with Sustainable ��ݮ��Ƶ Region, a local environmental non-profit that helps convert organizational interest in sustainability into tangible action.

Meet Simone. Simone helps make food sustainable at Provision Coalition by coordinating strategic planning sessions that help food and beverage manufacturing companies embed sustainability into their strategic plans.

Simone supports the onsite coaching and mentoring strategic planning sessions at Provision Coalition, a company that helps manufacturing companies across Canada make food sustainably. In her presentation, she will share the step-by-step process used to embed sustainability into business strategy and discuss the real opportunities and challenges. Connecting organizational purpose to personal purpose, she will show how as an emerging sustainability professional, you should define your purpose in order to find meaningful work.

Need a refresh on your wardrobe? Sustainable Campus Initiative is holding a two-day clothing sale to help recycle gently used clothes on campus for affordable prices.

Stop by the Student Life Centre Great Hall on March 28th and 29th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm to browse through gently used clothing items - everything from t-shirts, leather jackets, and even prom dresses!

All clothes have been washed, and proceeds from the event will support future sustainability initiatives and clothing sales. Hope to see you there!

All prices will be marked on merchandise as-is. First come, first serve.

SCI is also looking for volunteers to help with the sale, including preparation on March 27th. As a reward for volunteering, you will receive a $10 FEDS gift card for every two shifts. Sign up on the LEADS form and complete the Doodle to indicate your availability.

Join Sustainable Campus Initiative for an engaging conversation on international community sustainability partnerships. This talk features Eduardo Ordóñez-Ponce, PhD student in Social and Ecological Sustainability with international experience in sustainability from the business world. He is currently working with four large community sustainability partnerships from Barcelona (Spain), Bristol (UK), Gwangju (Korea), and Montreal (Canada).

He will give a talk on his ideas and current research focused on understanding organizations, including businesses, partnering for the sustainability of communities.

Sustainable refreshments will be provided by the ES Coffee Shop.
