Central Stores has announced an e-waste initiative just in time for spring cleaning! As in the past, the MAD Studio (EV2-1003) will have bins available to drop off items. Starting Monday, May 27^th through to Friday, June 7^th, you can drop off UW-owned e-waste between the hours of 9:00-11:30am and 1:30-4:00pm (M-F). If you require a cart to transport your equipment, please contact the MAD Studio to borrow one. If you are dropping off a computer, please submit an RT first, as the old data needs to be removed before recycling the computer, and make sure you have backed up all old files.

This two week initiative will provide the opportunity for your department to clear out space-consuming electronic waste and other surplus items. Please take advantage while you can!

Please note that all faculty, staff and students are invited to drop off personal e-waste items at our Central Stores (263 Phillip Street, ��ݮ��Ƶ) at any time throughout the year (M-F) from 7:00am to 4:00pm.

There are several fun activities for students, staff and faculty to get involved in this week!

Sorting Challenge

Student Life Centre: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 11am-4pm
School of Architecture: Friday October 28th, noon-4pm

Stop by the Sustainability Office's table to try and sort as many items as you can into garbage and recycling bins. You will have 30 seconds to complete this challenge and you will be entered into a prize draw for one of the following:

One of 4 Sustainability Kits (valued at approximately $50)
One of 3 $10 WatCard Top-ups (valued at $10)

Contest Terms: No purchase necessary, odds of winning will depend on number of participants. Participants will be asked to provide their email address for the sole purpose of contacting prize winners. Winners will be asked to complete a skill-testing question before claiming their prize. Contest closes at 4:30pm on October 28, 2016. This contest is only open to registered University of ��ݮ��Ƶ students and employees, including Affiliated and Federated Institutions. Winners will be selected on November 2, 2016.

UW Waste Week Quiz

The UW Waste Week Quiz will open at 9am on Monday October 17 and close at 4:30pm on Friday October 21.

This quiz will test your recycling knowledge and give you a final score:

0-3 – Recycling Rookie: Double-down on your recycling facts if you want to make it further!

4-7 – Recycling Recruit: Good job, you’ve mastered the basics, but there is still more to learn.

8-10 – Waste Wonk: Your waste reduction knowledge is nearly complete.

11-12 – Garbage Guru: You have deep insight into the ways of recycling and garbage reduction. Share your wisdom with others!

Prizes include:

3 Sustainability kits (valued at approximately $50)
3 $10 WatCard top-ups (valued at $10)

Green Offices Challenge

The UW Green Offices will also be participating in Waste Week. Their schedule for the week is:

Muggy Monday (the 17^th) – Bring a mug or travel mug to work and save 10 cents on coffee!
Tupperware Tuesday (the 18^th) – Pack your own lunch in reusable containers to reduce disposable packaging
Water Bottle Wednesday (the 19^th) – Refill your reusable water bottle at one of the refill stations across campus in order to reduce plastic waste
Throwback Thursday (the 20^th) – Take a picture of any items thrown in the wrong bin and post your pictures on Twitter
Friday Finals (the 21^st) – You will be emailed a link to a quiz - complete it to test your recycling knowledge

Complete the sign-up in your office to be entered into the prize draw. The Green Office with the highest participation in the challenge will get bragging rights! Good luck to our Green Offices!

Battery Campaign for Residences

Drop off your batteries at the new battery depots UWP, V1, and CLV Front Desks and help keep batteries out of landfill.

Plus, you can join a prize draw for one of the following by filling out a ballot at the Front Desk when you drop off your batteries:

One solar battery charger (valued at approximately $70)
10 WatCard top-ups of $10 (valued at $10)

Annual Spring Cleaning

Central Stores will be offering a one month (M-F) departmental e-waste and surplus pickup initiative through April and May. Working with administration, departments with selected university owned e-waste and surplus, should email Sean Kimpinski at skimpinski@uwaterloo.ca to be placed on a pickup list. In the email please list the items being picked up and the locations, so that a pickup date and time can be scheduled.

This one month initiative will allow your department the opportunity to clear out e-waste “for disposal” and other items “for surplus/disposal” without the normal paperwork requirements. Any items deemed to be of high value, will be separated and a request for an “Asset Disposal Form” will be issued.

Please take advantage of this event and seize the opportunity to rid your department of space consuming electronic waste and other surplus items.

Also, please note that all staff and students are invited to drop off personal e-waste items at our Central Stores, 263 Phillip Street, ��ݮ��Ƶ location at any time throughout the year (M-F) from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Small e-waste items may also be dropped off in the Student Life Centre Lower Atrium.
