University and library joint reading and coding program returns for a third year | Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business

This fearsome yellow fellow was one of nearly a dozen different digital creations made by young readers/programmers in 2016

Two years ago, Jordan Mandel approached the Stratford Public Library about joining forces on a project that combines coding and reading.

Mandel, the digital media lab instructor at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ Stratford campus, teamed up with library staff to create the Code-A-Character program. It blends print and digital – participants between the ages of 11 and 18 pick a character from a book and make it come to life visually.

“It was a great idea,” said Sally Hengeveld, the children and teen collections and outreach librarian. “Very successful.”
