
With deep appreciation and pride, the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is delighted to announce Dr. Gord Willmot’s appointment as Distinguished Professor Emeritus, celebrating his exceptional career and lasting contributions to the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ!
Dr. Willmot’s association with the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ spans over four decades, from his early days as a student to a distinguished career as a professor and internationally recognized researcher. He is renowned for his foundational work in insurance risk modelling and ruin theory, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and recognition as one of the most-cited scholars in actuarial science worldwide.
His influential research achievements include serving as Editor of Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, a leading journal of actuarial science, and holding the department’s first endowed chair, the Munich Re Chair in Insurance, for a record 20-year tenure. His co-authored book Loss Models: From Data to Application, now in its fifth edition, is widely regarded as the standard reference for both academic programs and the Society of Actuaries’ professional certification.
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Willmot has supervised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now hold prestigious academic positions around the globe. His outstanding mentorship was recognized with the Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ.
