Many businesses are striving to adopt\nr esponsible design practices and avoid any unintended consequences of\nthei r products and services\, ranging from privacy vulnerabilities to\nalgorit hmic bias. We propose a novel approach to fairness and\ninclusiveness base d on experimentation. We use experimentation because\nwe want to assess no t only the intrinsic properties of products and\nalgorithms but also their impact on people. We do this by introducing\nan inequality approach to A/ B testing\, leveraging the Atkinson index\nfrom the economics literature. We show how to perform causal inference\nover this inequality measure. We also introduce the concept of\nsite-wide inequality impact\, which capture s the inclusiveness impact\nof targeting specific subpopulations for exper iments\, and show how to\nconduct statistical inference on this impact. We provide real examples\nfrom LinkedIn\, as well as an open-source\, highly scalable\nimplementation of the computation of the Atkinson index and its \nvariance in Spark/Scala. We also provide over a year's worth of\nlearnin gs -- gathered by deploying our method at scale and analyzing\nthousands o f experiments -- on which areas and which kinds of product\ninnovations se em to inherently foster fairness through inclusiveness.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: T his seminar will be given online through Webex. To\njoin\, please follow this link: VIRTUAL SEMINAR BY GUILLAUME\nSAINT-JACQUES.\n[https://uwater loo.webex.com/mw3300/mywebex/default.do?nomenu=true&siteurl=uwaterloo&serv ice=6&rnd=0.9751921256439015&main_url=https%3A%2F%2Fuwaterloo.webex.com%2F ec3300%2Feventcenter%2Fevent%2FeventAction.do%3FtheAction%3Ddetail%26%26%2 6EMK%3D4832534b000000042ab3d2733c7df5c7c52d9b1548067e04cc87840974bb63e5825 90b4a504d3683%26siteurl%3Duwaterloo%26confViewID%3D164118073612182027%26en cryptTicket%3DSDJTSwAAAATBiGkGQSouSGBwQAYDhg1i1P66SDL5BZJ8R8stvLcwhg2%26]\ n DTSTAMP:20250519T062454Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
