WATERLOO REGION — A local researcher says sewage from the region’s waste water treatment plants is making male fish female in the Grand River.

Mark Servos, Canada Research chair in water quality protection at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ, said he and a team of student researchers made the discovery downstream from Kitchener’s Doon treatment plant and À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s treatment plant. The group found the mutation in rainbow darter fish, which are plentiful throughout the Grand and about the size of a person’s baby finger.
