UWRA Presents: Dr. Jennifer Harris – DNA Detective

Dr. Jennifer Harris – Archives for the People

We usually think of archives as something only connected to the past, but they can also help us understand the present. Dr. Jennifer Harris, a professor of English, uses her skills with archives to uncover forgotten historical figures. Her discoveries have been shared in textbooks, poems, documentaries, and more. She also volunteers to help solve cases of unknown parentage by combining archival research with DNA evidence. One of these cases even helped set a new rule for people seeking Irish citizenship. Her work raises important ethical questions and sheds light on the complex history of certain institutions. Her efforts have been featured in major media outlets like the Washington Post, CNN, PBS, and ESPN.
