Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

My research project focuses on investigating the potential of Pseudomonas fluorescens as a biocontrol agent to combat Fusarium oxysporum, an infectious pathogen that threatens tomato crops. By leveraging natural biocontrol strategies, this study aims to reduce the agricultural dependence on chemical pesticides, which pose risks to both human health and the environment. The goal is to foster more sustainable farming practices that enhance food security by improving the resilience of crops to diseases. This research also integrates advanced molecular techniques to examine how plant immune responses are triggered, providing deeper insights into plant health and disease resistance. Understanding these interactions between plants and microbes is essential for promoting long-term agricultural sustainability. Overall, this project holds the potential to improve crop productivity, contribute to sustainable agricultural systems, and offer valuable knowledge for the future of environmental and food security.

What are some activities you hope to accomplish during your postdoctoral appointment at University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

As a postdoctoral scholar at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, I aim to contribute significantly to cutting-edge research initiatives, collaborate closely with esteemed faculty and fellow researchers by expanding my network with scholars in Canada and other nations. Similarly, I would like to publish impactful findings in reputable journals, and present them at national and international conferences, mentor and inspire students, and further develop my expertise in my field of study while preparing for future career opportunities in academia or industry.

Do you have any relevant academic projects you would like to share?

During my PhD studies, I investigated the lipid-mediated molecular mechanisms underlying the plant defence response in the Phytophthora sojae-soybean (Glycine max) pathosystem using biochemical and molecular techniques. This research laid the groundwork for future work in crop disease management, aiming to develop soybean cultivars with enhanced resistance to P. sojae. Given that P. sojae causes approximately $20 billion in global soybean crop losses annually, the findings could help reduce these economic losses and decrease the reliance on chemical pesticides. Ultimately, this work contributes to more sustainable agricultural practices, promoting both environmental and economic benefits in soybean production.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

My research interests lie at the intersection of sustainable food systems, environment, and health. For my postdoctoral work, I will investigate the impact of water security and participatory water governance on women's empowerment throughout their life course in East Africa. This study aligns with the Provost Scholarship's vision of contributing empirical knowledge and promoting gender equality and women's empowerment, which are essential for improving livelihoods and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Focusing my research on Uganda and Kenya and collaborating with local community partners also supports the university's goal of prioritizing international partnerships to maximize global impact and contribute to the global good.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

My research work examines the ways that tourism can be more than simply an economic tool for Indigenous communities. I am interested in working alongside Indigenous and Tribal communities, including my own, to be able to explore and document how tourism can be a vehicle for resurgence, or (re)connecting people to traditional culture, community and Country (living lands, waters and non-human kin).

What are some activities you hope to accomplish during your postdoctoral appointment at University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

During this postdoctoral research opportunity, I aim to develop and expand upon the research I had started through my PhD dissertation focused on Indigenous-led tourism and resurgence. Specifically, I aim to publish both a book and journal articles focused on comparative Indigenous-led tourism models from fieldwork in my native Oklahoma Indian Country, as well as abroad from Indigenous Australia. I also aim to continue my fieldwork and research outputs examining the intersection of Indigenous communities, tourism and mining. Finally, I also am looking forward to publishing based on recently completed research focused on developing a climate justice strategy for the tourism and travel industry.

Why did you choose the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

I chose UW because the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is leading and supporting extraordinary work related to tourism. The research work that is promoted in this department is not simply useful to the field and industry of tourism, but it is deeply meaningful and relevant in these times of ongoing global crises and climate chaos. I am very grateful and excited to be working with my mentor, Dr. Bryan Grimwood, who walks the talk when it comes to supporting Indigenous scholarship and the community relationships that are required to do research that is worthwhile and impactful.

What are you most looking forward to about joining the postdoctoral scholars community at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

I am most excited about the conversations and knowledge exchanges we will have across our different disciplines and research topics. I am also looking forward to being connected with and supporting other Indigenous and international students on campus.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

The prospect of designing novel data storage technologies based on nanomaterials, whose electric polarization and magnetization can be controlled simultaneously, promises to yield higher storage densities and faster processing speeds, while simultaneously reducing the power requirements of these devices. The class of materials known as multiferroics are ideal candidates in that regard, as they are simultaneously ferroelectric and ferromagnetic. The overall objective of this research is to quantitatively describe the correlation between the degrees of freedom of ferroelectric nanocrystals (NCs) with respect to their crystal and electronic structure, at the nanoscale and ensemble level, when interfaced with ferromagnetic NCs, in multiferroic nanocomposites.

The proposed project aligns perfectly with ��ݮ��Ƶ’s strategic research theme of Advancing Research for Global Impact. With applications to several of the important global challenges outlined in ��ݮ��Ƶ’s strategic research plan, including quantum information, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology, our projects will help to bolster ��ݮ��Ƶ’s national and global position within these key research fields. Our innovative approach to the development and characterization of magnetoelectric nanomaterials has tremendous implications for the advancement of key research fields, which in turn, will drive the advancement of our society. No single field can tackle the obstacles of the increasingly complex, real-world problems our society faces, but through international collaborations across diverse backgrounds, we hope to open myriad new perspectives on these problems, which is the key to ultimately solving them.

What are some activities you hope to accomplish during your postdoctoral appointment at University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

To gain a more in-depth fundamental understanding of magnetic materials, and more practical, hands-on training in magnetic and magneto-optical materials characterization techniques.
To gain some teaching experience for at least one term.
To focus my area of interest within the field of magnetic nanomaterials, and to become a more independent researcher within that area.

Have you been the recipient of any other major or donor-funded awards?

I was the recipient of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship during my Ph.D. studies, which gave me the freedom to focus entirely on my research, and not have to worry about finances or TA responsibilities.

Do you have any relevant academic projects you would like to share?

We will explore nanocrystalline film composites of alternating layers of ferromagnetic cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanocrystals (NCs) and ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) NCs, as well as CFO NCs encapsulated within hollow BTO nanostructures. In conjunction with the investigation of BTO nanocomposites, we will further investigate the effects of composite architecture by using lead titanate (PTO) nanowires (NWs) as a strongly ferroelectric component upon which we can nucleate and grow CFO NCs directly.

In addition, we will investigate the magnetoelectric properties of dilute semiconductor (DMS) NCs prepared by doping small concentrations of Mn2+ ions into cesium-lead-halide (Cl, Br, I) perovskites. We hypothesize that the ability to modulate NC electronic structure by tailoring halide composition will effectively allow for fine tuning the conduction band spin-splitting by altering the exchange interactions between conduction band states and the paramagnetic dopant centres. We will simultaneously explore the possibility of doping these NCs with other paramagnetic transition metal dopants (i.e., Co2+, Cr3+, Ni2+) to elucidate the effect of the dopants’ electronic structure on their coupling with the NC lattice, and achieve another level of control of the spin states. The ultimate goal is to achieve spin polarization and establish perovskite-based DMSs as a new class of spintronics materials.

These complimentary projects allow for the intrinsic (through doping) and extrinsic (through nanocomposites) control of the magneto-electric properties of perovskite-based nanomaterials, which will allow for a more fundamentals - and applications-based understanding of these materials, respectively.

The University of ��ݮ��Ƶ has a world-renowned reputation as a leader in the fields of science and technology, as well as tremendous collaborations between industry and academia, which can facilitate the advancement of science. The research being conducted by the Radovanovic group is at the forefront of the fields of magnetic nanomaterials and magneto-plasmonics. Furthermore, the Radovanovic group is one of the few groups in the world with a magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectrometer capable of performing variable temperature magneto-optical measurements at fields of up to 7 Tesla, which is a powerful tool for the characterization of magnetic materials.

What I currently enjoy about the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ is that it is a university that favours interdisciplinary research collaboration and values principles such as diversity, inclusion, equality, respect, and excellence in research and innovation.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

The agriculture and agribusiness sector accounts for a significant share of all the major economic activities and sources of income among smallholder farmers in Ghana and across Africa. The agriculture and agribusiness sector accounts for a significant share of all the major economic activities and sources of income among smallholder farmers in Ghana and across Africa. However, the sector continues to be controlled by primary production as a result of high climate variability and hydrological flows, especially in the Northern Savannas of Ghana. Generally, weather variables are difficult to mitigate, especially for small-holder farmers, and they mostly have a great impact on the farming activities of these farmers. For this reason, an effective and reliable weather risk management tool (weather derivative) is needed to hedge farmers and agricultural stakeholders from the perils of weather extremes and uncertainties. The work will establish an optimal model that minimizes "compound" basis risk. This study will help companies and individuals overcome the loss of crop yield due to extreme and volatile weather events. They can explore the possibility of hedging the risks due to weather by buying weather derivatives that guarantee a payoff once there is forecasted erratic or extreme weather.

Do you have any relevant academic projects you would like to share?

Weather derivatives have developed into a promising market-based risk financing solution for agricultural weather risk. However, most of the pricing approaches in weather derivatives are sensitive to model uncertainty, and this can be mitigated by making models more robust to volatility. The conventional method to mitigate the volatility in most conventional weather derivative models is to model the volatility of the underlying weather variable using a stochastic process. However, this method leads to model uncertainty. We develop a new theoretical framework for modelling and pricing growing degree-day weather derivatives under volatility uncertainty. The diffusion process of the underlying weather variable (temperature) is driven by a G-Brownian motion, which represents the volatility uncertainty. In particular, we present a robust pricing method for growing degree-day-indexed weather derivatives with a non-linear Brownian motion. Our pricing technique can be used to manage climate risk in the agricultural sector.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

My dissertation-based book project explores ruling Islamists’ approaches to minorities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It analyzes the variation in ruling Islamists’ treatment of the South Sudanese and Darfuris in Sudan, as well as the Kurds in Turkey. It asks why some minorities are repressed while others are accommodated. For example, non-Arab Darfuris were subject to a genocide, while the South Sudanese were afforded the right to self-determination in Sudan. The research project was stimulated by a marked gap of knowledge on ethnic minorities in MENA in general and Islamists’ approaches toward these groups in particular. Despite its real-world and academic salience, empirical research on the relationship between contemporary Islamist rulers and ethnic minorities has been sparse.

My research finds that Islamists in power do not follow a coherent approach toward minorities. Rather, Islamists change their approaches diachronically between accommodative and exclusionary toward the different minority groups regardless of religious bond. The manuscript challenges conventional expectations by demonstrating that religious-ideological and identity motivations have little explanatory powers. Instead, it illustrates that governing approaches toward minorities are an outcome of coalition building contingent on first, strategic interactions between domestic actors, and second, regional and international contexts.

What are some activities you hope to accomplish during your postdoctoral appointment at University of ��ݮ��Ƶ?

I intend on fulfilling several objectives during my post-doctoral fellowship. First, I aim to increase my research output through completing a book manuscript based on my doctoral dissertation. Additionally, I hope to contribute to ��ݮ��Ƶ’s intellectual environment through participation in the Department of Anthropology's speaker series. During my fellowship, I also hope to contribute to ��ݮ��Ƶ’s Anti-Racism Initiatives.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

My work involves conducting research and publishing articles as well as teaching.

My research mainly focuses on developing novel polymer nanobiocomposites with multifunctional, biodegradable, and recyclable properties. These novel polymer nanobiocomposites will be exploited in organic electronic devices and water desalination. This research work is of societal importance and transformative. This project also aligns well with research strengths set by the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, such as nanotechnology, water and energy sustainability, and security. Furthermore, this project favours multidisciplinary approaches to research leading to innovative knowledge and quality technology in the interest of improving societies. The results to be achieved in this research project will significantly contribute to the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) such as energy security, clean water and sanitation. For instance, the novel multifunctional polymer nanobiocomposites to be developed can be considered potential materials for manufacturing new dielectric materials, affecting the light emission properties of the organic light-emitting devices. These novel polymer nanobiocomposites offer novel approaches for developing bio-based wastewater purification and desalination solutions. These polymer nanobiocomposite materials can also be prospective sustainable materials to overcome the limitation in energy storage, industrial separation purposes, textile, and food packaging.

Do you have any relevant academic projects you would like to share?

Polymer nanobiocomposites have attracted tremendous attention in many fields due to their flexibility and excellent multifunctional properties. These multifunctionalities arise from the combination of various components in the polymer composites. Additionally, each of these components plays a significant role in enhancing the performance of the polymer nanobiocomposites to achieve a sustainable and efficient water purification process, improve electrical conductivity, enhance light absorption, and charge carrier mobility in electronic devices such as solar cells and organic transistors. Hence, in this context, we develop polymer nanobiocomposites made of non-toxic or less toxic materials that can be regenerated. Then, we investigate the thorough understanding of these polymer nanobiocomposites' thermal stability and physical, mechanical, chemical, electrical, optical, and antimicrobial properties. This investigation is needed to pave the way for their full exploitation in water purification and electronic devices.

Describe your work and how it embodies the nature of the program.

As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, my work focuses on understanding the complex causes of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating condition affecting millions worldwide, including over half a million Canadians. Despite significant research efforts, the exact mechanisms leading to AD remain unclear, and current treatments are ineffective. My research aims to bridge this knowledge gap by exploring the interplay between lifestyle factors, environmental toxins, and neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) in the development of AD. I will investigate how these factors influence the behaviour of a key protein called Amyloid beta (AÎ²), which is implicated in AD pathology. Using a multidisciplinary approach, combining cell biology, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, and biophysics, I will study how neurotransmitters affect AÎ²'s impact on brain cells. I will also examine how exposure to toxic substances and certain drugs can either exacerbate or protect against AÎ²-induced damage.

By shedding light on these complex interactions, my research will provide crucial insights into the development of AD, ultimately contributing to the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies. This work embodies the postdoctoral program's spirit by:

Do you have any relevant academic projects you would like to share?

During my Ph.D, I extensively investigated the neurodevelopmental toxicity and molecular mechanism of tetrabromobisphenol A bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ether (TBBPA-DHEE) on different life stages of Zebrafish. I have also conducted a number of studies on various emerging contaminants, especially microplastic pollution, and their effect on the human population.

My choice of the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ is due to several reasons; the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ is known for its interdisciplinary research approach, which aligns with my project's requirement for a systems biology approach spanning multiple disciplines. Additionally, the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ fosters a collaborative research environment, allowing me to work with and learn from experts in various fields, including cell biology, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, and biophysics.
