What to Say When: A workshop on Responding to Hate

Conrad Grebel is pleased to offer an enrichment day for high school students grades 10 - 12.

This day-long workshop will encourage and inspire youth to work toward peace by understanding how to respond to hate while engaging in important dialogue. The Ripple Effect Education (TREE), will lead sessions to spark enthusiasm and build skills for peacebuilding. To register your class or club contact Rebekah rjdejong @uwaterloo.ca.

Peace Day is hosted by the Peace and Conflict Studies department at Conrad Grebel University College.

The 2024 Peace Week community calendar is now live!

Every year the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement hosts a public community calendar of events and activities running from International Day of Peace to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Community organizations are invited to add their events to the calendar and everyone is welcome to participate in the engaging activities to promote peace.

If you're hosting a peace related event between 21st September (International Day of Peace) and 30th September (National Day of Truth and Reconciliation) that you'd like us to feature, let us know via the submit an event form or reach out by email.

PACS-Grebel MCC Blanket Exercise

The Peace and Conflict Studies Department and Grebel Student Services are inviting you to participate in the Mennonite Central Committee's Blanket Exercise Event to observe Peace Week. Drinking water and snacks will be provided.

Registration required: Maximum of 40 participants. Deadline: 1 pm, September 22, 2022.

About the Blanket Exercise

The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a workshop that explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Blankets arranged on the floor represent land and participants are invited to step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. The workshop helps people to understand how the colonization of this land impacts those who were here long before settlers arrived. It engages people’s minds and hearts in understanding why the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples is often broken and how we can take action together (source: KAIROS Canada).

The Centre for Career Action will be facilitating this workshop on networking and career search skills. This is great opportunity to refine your ability to make connections with professionals and practitioners in the field of peace and conflict studies. Undergraduate studies is about more than just academic work; it's also a chance to connect and collaborate with people who will be key to securing a career after school.

This workshop will be approximately 90 minutes long and includes graduate students. Please register here.

In celebration of Peace Week 2019, the PACS department is hosting Career Paths in Peacebuilding, a panel and Q&A on pursuing a career related to Peace and Conflict Studies. Come out to this free event if you are a student (undergraduate or graduate), worker, activist, entrepreneur, etc., interested in working in the field of peacebuilding. Four panelists with diverse expertise will talk about their experience entering the field, lessons learned, and hear and respond to questions from the audience.

Frances Fortune has worked with several national and international NGOs in Africa. Currently working as Senior Project Manager for MEDA while pursueing a PhD at Balsillie School, Frances specializes in conflict transformation processes, strategy development and program design, with a particular focus on theories of change integrating socio-politiccal processes and media activities.

Cesar Jaramillo is the Executive Director of Project Ploughshares, a peace research institute that works with churches, governments and civil society, in Canada and abroad, to advance policies and actions to prevent war and armed violence and build peace. Cesar's work has focusend on nuclear disarmament, outer space security and conventional weapons control.

Eric Boynton is a constable working in the Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity branch of the ��ݮ��Ƶ Region Police Service. Eric holds a Master of Peace and Conflict Studies and is currently a doctoral candidate at Royal Roads University.

Julie Friesen is the Director of Programs Conflict Resolution and Mediation Services at Community Justice Initiatives, a non-profit organization that addresses conflict and crime with restorative justice principles. Julie holds an MA in Sociology and has many years experience as a practitioner, facilitating mediation and restorative responses to conflict and crime.

Saturday, September 19

Film Screening: Resistencia - the fight for the Aguan Valley

Resistencia tells the story of campesinos in the Aguan Valley of Honduras and their response to the 2009 military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya on the eve of an election that would have included a vote on whether or not to re-write the constitution. One of the many groups that stood to gain from a democratically elected government and new constitution was the country's hundreds of thousands of landless farmers, who planned to enshrine their right to soil in the new constitution.

The film follows farmers of the fertile Aguan Valley, who responded to the coup by taking over 10,000 acres of palm oil plantations under illegal control of the most powerful man in the country, Miguel Facussé. The farmers established co-ops on the land in the face of horrifically violent responses from Facussé and his paramilitary security guards. The film follows this story, and profiles some of the leaders who have resisted this violence and continued to fight for their right to land, safety, security and peace.

Join us for a screening of the film followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Jesse Freeston, that will be led by PACS students.

Workshop: Vocal Chant (Kecak)

Come out and participate with your voice, body, and spirit! See how we can work together to make music and create peace through a communal experience of chanting interlocking vocal rhythms from the island of Bali, Indonesia.

Grebel's 2015 Distinguished Service Award Winner, Johnny Wideman, will speak in a private address for Grebel students at Community Supper.

Play: This Will Lead to Dancing

Theatre of the Beat will present a new play about wholeness and belonging. Free registration required, with pay what you can donation at the door. After the show there will be a short presentation to Johnny Wideman, for the receipt of the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award.

High School Peace Day: "The Art of Peace"

This interactive, day-long workshop will explore creativity as a tool for working against oppression. Through historic, global and personal case studies, students engage with the concept of peace building as an "art" that often calls for a creative approach.

This event is for pre-registered high school students. If you are a teacher interested in getting your class involved, please contact Jessica Scott, Recruitment Coordinator.
