Retreating from Risk: Advancing equitable managed retreat through an international research partnership

In March 2023, P4A successfully applied for Seed Grant funding from the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Climate Institute and Water Institute to invest in proposal development and stakeholder convening for a project focused on equity-informed managed retreat in Canada, the United States, and Indonesia. The proposed research aims to co-create knowledge and actionable outputs to support the development and uptake of equity-informed, community-engaged managed retreat programs, not simply as a post-disaster response, but as a viable climate adaptation strategy.

Under the supervision of principal investigator, Dr. Brent Doberstein, P4A led the proposal development and grant writing for this project and convened twelve research team members from the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ (Dr. Jason Thistlethwaite, Dr. Daniel Henstra, Dr. Johanna Wandel, Dr. Rodrigo Costa), University of Kansas, Stony Brook University, Texas Tech University, University of Delaware, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and the Emergency Planning Secretariat. Since then, additional partners from the University of British Columbia and Swasaba Research Initiative have signed on!

In March 2024, we received notice that the Retreating from Risk project has been funded and will commence in September 2024. P4A is excited to continue to provide in-kind project support in the form of project management and research supports, including the organization of an in-person research design workshop hosted at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ this upcoming October.

Managed retreat is an essential yet highly complex strategy for building climate change resilience. By providing decision-supports for municipalities and communities in Canada, the USA, and Indonesia, RFR will help shape policies and actions that will safeguard lives, enhance climate resilience, and provide equitable outcomes for vulnerable members of communities exposed to flood hazards
