Libraries are increasingly building collections of learning materials in electronic formats. As the availability grows, it becomes necessary to consider the long-term discovery, access, management, and local ownership issues inherent in the development and distribution of such collections. To address these issues, the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ Library created a localized repository dubbed the Online Learning Object Repository (OLOR), which meant to house and make discoverable library-created online learning objects for broad distribution, discovery, and reuse. This presentation will explore the challenges and successes we have had in moving forward with the OLOR at the center of our learning and teaching strategy, from inception pre-pandemic and soliciting buy-in from stakeholders and colleagues, through the launch of the repository to the continuing efforts to develop learning materials of use and interest to faculty, staff, and students across the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ community.

Do you have a great idea for an OER but need to find the right platform to build it? PressBooks might be a good choice. Available for free to members of the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ community thanks to the sponsorship of eCampus Ontario, PressBooks is an easy-to-use digital publishing tool for creating online books, along with e-books and even print materials. This 1-hour session will provide an overview of PressBooks and how it can be used to build and host your OER including examples of successful OER projects that have used the platform. The session will also include a walk-through for how to set up key features in PressBooks, followed by time for Q&A.

In the session you will learn:

What kinds of digital and other materials PressBooks can create
What the limitations of the PressBooks platform are
How to get started in the PressBooks editor
How to incorporate H5P interactive elements in a PressBooks website
Where to find more information and documentation about advanced features of PressBooks

Participants who wish to actively follow along during the walkthrough will need to set up their account with eCampus Ontario in advance by visiting the eCO Open Library and clicking “Request Account” at the top of the page. However, an account is not required for this session and the information and instructions will be relevant to all participants.

This presentation will address this head on by shedding light on the adaptation process: the mechanics of going about it, the problems that sometimes arise, the editing decisions that need to be made.

When I (James Skidmore) took over FINE 102 / VCULT 100 - World Cinema and Visual Culture, I wanted to move away from the commercial textbook package in favour of OER in order to reduce student costs. But I also wanted to "localize" the textbook - that is, create a resource that was situated in the actual course and which students would see was tailored to their learning. This textbook would need to do two things: acquaint students with world cinema while also introducing them to the analytical vocabulary and concepts used in cinema studies.

The first part of this presentation will outline the adaptation process in Pressbooks and the editorial considerations that come into play. In the second part, Zoë Carbone and Sabrina Romano, two students from the course, will be on hand to explain how we're working together to enhance the chapters I'm writing. Using their notes and ideas, we're incorporating their voices in those original chapters through chat dialogues and other interventions. We hope that by bringing the three of us into conversation with each other, the textbook will engage future students in a way rarely seen in course materials.

As part of this presentation, we (Leslie and Benjamin) will share our journey in collaborating on the creation of TK and BC Labels and will consider how the University community can use this system moving forward, as a way to extend and in some cases supersede “standard” protocols related to copyright and fair dealing within an educational system. Guided by the Indigenous methodology of circle sharing, this collaborative session will look for knowledge sharing among all the people who are interested in becoming a part of the roundtable. To that end, we will go around the circle to ask participants three questions: How could you perceive TK and BC Labels intersecting in your work? What are some of the barriers you perceive in using TK and BC Labels? How might we extend the idea of collaboration in terms of Indigenous relationality? Note: this session will be capped at 12 participants.

To introduce considerations of equity, diversity, and inclusivity in curricular and co-curricular offerings, many instructors and staff are looking for resources on inclusive instruction and inclusivity-informed practices – either for their own professional learning or to share and use with their students. In the last three years, several excellent OERs that focus on inclusivity, in a broad sense, were developed by Canadian institutions, including ours. In this 30-minute resource-sharing session, we will use a guided tour approach to share some OERs with a focus on Indigenization, intercultural considerations, anti-racism, mental health and wellbeing, and equity-minded teaching. We will highlight some activities, tools and elements of selected OERs that could be adapted in various teaching and learning contexts.

Intercultural competence (IC) is an area of personal development that informs and influences interactions across formal and informal contexts involving cultural difference. Although there are numerous programs aimed at supporting learners’ engagement with IC components, there is a limited availability of comprehensive programs offered as open access resources.

This project was made possible through a grant from eCampus Ontario with the purpose of developing content for a short duration learning opportunity, which was supported by a cross-campus team of collaborators. The project focused on a) promoting learning, appreciation, and understanding of cultural differences, b) creating opportunities to engage respectfully across cultures, valuing cultural perspectives and life experiences, and c) utilizing intrinsic and extrinsic strategies to interact and communicate across cultural groups.

The final product consists of three accessible and interactive modules on 1) awareness and attitudes (e.g., learning about stereotypes, biases, and microaggressions), 2) expanding intercultural skills (e.g., cultural values, non-verbal communication, and ways to expand one’s knowledge of global issues), and 3) skills (e.g., observation, reflection, communication, critical thinking, and empathy).

Key characteristics of the modules include the ability to select specific content and activities, learners’ ability to interact with the modules at their own pace, a variety of interactive activities using different types of media, sample answers for all activities, further strategies, self-assessment, and glossary of terms. All content and activities are supported by intercultural development theory and real-life examples that make the content relatable and engaging.

The Salt Tour is designed to engage and facilitate student learning in Earth 121 Introductory Earth Sciences at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. It intentionally aligns with the foundational course learning objective of adopting the perspective of a Geoscientist, divided into four categories of thinking (spatial, temporal, field, and system). Visneskie’s (2021) BSc Thesis demonstrated that strategically assembling uniquely-created 360-degree photospheres with points of interest (i.e. 2D photos, figures, text) in Google Expedition improved learning. Visneskie then created a Photosphere Tour – Guide and Benefits of Virtual Field Experiences in Geoscience Education [Playlist]. Once Google Expedition retired and the pandemic temporarily forced classes online a ArcGIS StoryMap was created, refining what was learned using a class set of VR Viewers. Quantitative results from knowledge-based matching questions and qualitative results from Geoscience thinking short-answer questions showed improvements in learning and specifically helping students think like Geoscientists, equally among spatial, temporal, field, and system thinking. Enjoy the Salt Tour, effective at adopting the perspective of a Geoscientist and understanding salt, a precious and fascinating resource. This work was inspired and funded by the Faculty of Science, Dean’s Undergraduate Teaching Initiative at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ.

Project-based courses are designed to engage students in active learning through real-world meaningful outcomes. When approaching a biology graduate level course in structured population models, the first author (instructor) proposed a course project of creating an OER resource (please see draft and in progress materials at https://www.ecotheory.ca/teach/BIOL652.html). This project, which could benefit other biology graduate students and early career professionals anywhere on the globe, and which would be a permanent record of scholarship, was used as an incentive for students to more authentically engage with the material.
