Title:  Caregiving for Aging Parents and Other Family Members – Opportunities and Unmet Challenges

Abstract:  In Canada and elsewhere, providing care and assistance to aging family members has become a normative part of life.  Private problems are becoming public troubles, as individuals and families adapt to changing circumstances and face the daunting task of finding and maintaining supports that fit their particular needs.  Where some see only pain points, others see entrepreneurial opportunities, room for technological innovation, and the development of new services geared to the aging population and their caregivers.  In this talk, we will explore some of the solutions that are being developed or considered as partial solutions to the emerging care crisis – and what options remain hidden or unexplored.

 About the speaker

Donna Lero's recent research focuses on two themes:

  • Understanding how to best support caregiving and work roles from the perspective of employees with caregiving responsibilities, employers and managers
  • Strategies for accommodating employees with disabilities (including episodic disabilities) in the workplace

She co-founded the University of Guelph’s Centre for Families, Work and Well-Being, where she leads a program of research on public policies, workplace practices and community supports.  Donna has authored or co-authored over 40 major reports and book chapters on a range of topics related to the integration of work and caregiving roles across the life course including parental leave, child care, caregiving for adults and aging family members, work-family stress, and flexible work arrangements.
