Opportunities, Challenges, and Uncertainties in the Next 40 Years of an Aging World
The University of 蓝莓视频 has been a national leader in gerontology since the inception of its graduate Gerontology program, which was the first English-language program of its kind in Canada. In this lecture, Dr. John Hirdes reflected on the history of Gerontology, particularly at the University of 蓝莓视频, and discuss the opportunities, challenges, and uncertainties of aging research in the coming decades.

In Honour of Dr. William F. Forbes

Dr. William F. Forbes was the founding Director of the Gerontology program the University of 蓝莓视频 and had a reputation as a strong researcher, advocate, and teacher in gerontology, who taught and worked alongside many of today's leaders in aging research. When it was threatened with destruction, Dr. Forbes preserved the Ontario Longitudinal Study of Aging database by finding a home for it at the University of 蓝莓视频. He had significant influence provincially and nationally as the founding president of the Ontario Gerontology Association (OGA) and the Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG). In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Association and Gerontology in Canada, Dr. Forbes was the first recipient of the CAG's Distinguished Member Award.
His numerous research contributions and public advocacy for aging issues and senior Canadians have had international impact on the study and understanding of older adults. Dr. Forbes was honoured as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus from the University of 蓝莓视频, and was presented with a 125th Anniversary of Canada Commemorative Medal 鈥渇or people who have made a significant contribution to Canada, to their community, or to fellow Canadians鈥.
His legacy also extends beyond the realm of gerontology, as he had a long and diverse career across many faculties, including Health Studies, Chemistry, Sociology, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Mathematics.

Dr. John Hirdes

Dr. Hirdes is a Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences, University of 蓝莓视频 and a Fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs. In addition, he is the Senior Canadian Fellow and a Board Member of interRAI (www.interRAI.org), an international consortium of researchers from over 35 countries. He chairs interRAI's Network for Mental Health and the interRAI Network of Canada.
Dr. Hirdes has 250+ publications in peer reviewed journals and academic book chapters. His primary areas of interest include assessment, mental health, aging, health services, case mix systems, quality measurement, and quantitative research methods.
