The two-stage system comprises anaerobic fixation of CO2 and\nconversion of the CO2 fixation product (for example\, acetate) to\nlipids\, from which biodiesel can be produced. In another application\,\nthe CO2 fixation pro duct is converted to alkanes. His work includes\nboth the engineering of t he microbes _and _development of a process\nto achieve gas-to-liquid con version in prototype systems. These\nsystems are scalable\, make no use of land (beyond what is needed for\ngenerating renewable electricity for hyd rogen production)\, do not\ncompete with food and are cost-competitive bas ed on high-level cost\nanalysis. Dr. Stephanopoulos will present the essen tial features of\nthis process.
