Amelia Grace Yates, D.M.A., is a pianist, adjudicator, and instructor from Ancaster Ontario. A recent graduate of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Yates’s research focusses on the solo piano music of Canadian composer Ann Southam. She is passionate about researching and performing the music of contemporary Canadian composers. In addition to performing as a soloist, Dr. Yates also enjoys collaborating with others in chamber groups and working with large ensembles and choirs.ÌýÌý

Toronto based award winning violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar brings the unique sounds of her Carnatic (South Indian classical) violin to the Chapel at Conrad Grebel. Subhadra will explain Carnatic Music andÌý how the Carnatic violin, while being identical to the western violin, still differs from it.

We have 8 different Chamber Ensemble groups this term, playing a wide variety of pieces.ÌýÌý

To aid in maintaining covid protocols, we are splitting the playersÌýinto two separate concerts.

The Balinese Gamelan Ensemble has been at Grebel for nearly 10 years, led by I Dewa Made Suparta.Ìý This term they will present some traditionalÌýpieces as well as an interesting collaborative composition.Ìý You will be astounded by the patterns and rhythms.

The orchestra@UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ is delighted to present our first in person concert with a live audience in two years.Ìý Members are from all six faculties, and this term we will have strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.Ìý

The University Choir is directed by Liska Jetchick.Ìý This term it will feature a wide range of pieces from around the world, including Baba Yetu, Shenendoah, and Flight Song.ÌýÌý

The UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Chamber Choir end of term concertÌýfeatured Gabriel Fauré's Requiem,Ìýas well as a number of smaller pieces. Directed by Dr. Mark Vuorinen, this 30 voice choir includesÌýmany talented singers from multiple Faculties at the University, as well as music majors.

We are glad to report that Jazz Music is alive and well at UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ. This ensemble is directed by Michael Wood, an experienced percussionist who performed at the Stratford Festival for many years. Members come from many different UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Faculties, Math in particular.Ìý The music is lively and always fun. This term Ernie Kalwa,Ìýnoted local sax player and Computer Science alumni, joined us for the Winter term.

The live concert took place on April 3, andÌýwasÌýrecorded toÌýbe released on the Grebel You-tube Channel on Monday, April 18th at 7pm.ÌýÌý

An outdoor Farmer's market is the perfect location to enjoy the Balinese Gamelan Ensemble.Ìý Please join us at the Hespeler VillageÌýMarket at 5pm. Both the student Balinese Gamelan and the Community Gamelan will be performing.ÌýAudience members will be able to try out the Gamelan instruments after the concert.
