Coming to the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ this fall is the play Truth Values, by New York writer/performer (and former mathematician) Gioia De Cari. She experienced first-hand the difficulties and inequities of being a professional woman in a male-dominated field and now uses her one-woman show to provide a humorous, scathing, insightful, and ultimately uplifting look at the challenges she and many other women face in STEM fields.

Following the play, join Gioia and panellists for a discussion on Women in STEM fields, the progress that has been made, and how we can continue to push towards greater equity, diversity, and inclusion for all people. This is a free event open to the entire University of ��ݮ��Ƶ community. All are encouraged to come see this incredible performance and engage in the conversation.

Beyond the Bulletin Feature

Ghazal Geshnizjani, Chair of Women in Mathematics, and Gioia De Cari sat down with Brandon Sweet and Pamela Smyth to appear on their Beyond the Bulletin podcast to discuss the inspiration for Truth Values. Gioia shares more about her background and journey through academia that led to her creating this award-winning play, and how her story has resonated with Ghazal and countless other mathematicians. Parking and Directions

Truth Values is being performed in the Theatre of the Arts, located in the Modern Languages building (ML) on Ring Road of the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ campus. The campus address is 200 University Ave W, ��ݮ��Ƶ ON with the ML building to the left of the main entrance. You can find a printable map that outlines how to access the Theatre of the Arts here.

There are two parking lot options for patrons of the Theatre of the Arts:

Lot C is a pay and display lot for visitors at a cost of $5.00 per day. Payment can be made with credit card or exact change ($1 and $2 coins). This lot is visible from University Avenue West but only accessible from Seagram Drive.
Lot H is a gated lot and is only available to visitors on weekends and after 3:45 p.m. on weekdays. The cost is $2 per hour to a maximum of $10. The machine will only take MasterCard or Visa. It will not accept Amex, Tim Hortons Visa or Visa Debit.

Accessible Parking can be found between the Dana Porter Library and the Modern Languages Building. The cost is $5 coin entry ($1 and $2 coins). This area can be accessed off the ring road. The driveway to the accessible parking spaces is found between the Ira G. Needles Hall building and Biology Building.

What? Food and entertainment.

When? Friday, March 15 2019 from 5.30 p.m. to 9.00 pm. Food begins at 5:30 p.m. Trivia and open mic begin at 6 p.m.

Where? MC 2065 and 2066.

Why? Come out for free food! Show off that singing voice! Wow your classmates with your trivia skills! Or just spend some time relaxing before we head into exams.

Imagine having only 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of your research to a non-specialist audience. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition asks research-based master's and doctoral students to do just that.

First established in 2008 by the University of Queensland, 3MT is now a prestigious international research communication competition that cultivates students' presentation and communication skills and provides them with invaluable networking opportunities.

Since 2011, the popularity of the competition has increased and 3MT competitions are now held in over 600 universities and institutions across 65 countries worldwide. At the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, 3MT winners also have the potential to win thousands of dollars in prizes.

Join us March 6 at 2pm in DC 1302 for the Math Faculty 3MT Heat! The winner will be entered in the university-wide competition on March 20 for the chance to advance to the provincial level.

Join us at our annual Alumni Theatre Night for a performance of Rhinoceros, by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Martha Ross and produced by the ��ݮ��Ƶ Drama department.

Ionesco wrote Rhinoceros in 1959 as a critique of neo-Fascism that took hold in parts of Europe after World War II. This story is about the bourgeois inhabitants of a French town in the 1950s one by one turn into a rhinoceros until they become a mindless and savage herd, all of the inhabitants that is, but the ‘Everyman’ character of Berenger.

Important information

Tickets will be available for purchase in February.
The performance will be in the revamped Modern Languages Building.
Free parking is available on campus however space is limited. Once the HV and H lots are full you will be required to pay for your own parking in lot C, payments can be made with coins or credit card at the blue machines ($5 for the evening).
Latecomers will not be admitted into the theatre.
Payments will not be taken at the door, tickets will not be provided. Seating in the theatre will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
