ÌýNewly named scholarships (since Fall 2020 edition)
Umra Vati Goyal Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship, valued at $5,000, will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate female student entering Year One of an eligible STEM program (science, technology, engineering or math) wherein women are underrepresented. Selection is based on academic excellence. Depending on the program, consideration may also be given to extracurricular achievements as assessed through the Admission Information Form (Engineering and Mathematics), an online video interview (Engineering) as well as contest scores assessed through the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (Mathematics). This fund is made possible by a donation from Amrit Goyal in honour of his mother, Umra Vati Goyal, and to support the next generation of women in STEM.
Rico Mariani 2SLGBTQ+ Graduate Award
One Award, valued at up to $4,500, will be provided annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in any program in the Faculty of Mathematics. Selection will be based on academic achievement (minimum cumulative average of 75% or equivalent) combined with extracurricular involvement or participation in volunteer activities that are advancing 2SLGBTQ+ initiatives with the goal of building a more inclusive environment on campus or in the community. Interested students should submit an application, which can be found on the Faculty of Mathematics website, by October 1st.
This fund is made possible by a donation from Rico Mariani (BMath ’88) who is committed to removing barriers for 2SLGBTQ+ students in the Faculty ofÌý Mathematics.
In memoriam
Mr. Frederick (“Fred") Constantine Dimson, BMath ’74
Frederick (“Fred") Constantine Dimson passed away peacefully in his home on March 27, 2022, at age 70. Fred is survived by his children, Alexander, Melina, Thomas, and his loving wife of 40 years, Norah Lee Farrow. He will be dearly missed by all, including siblings, Alex, Leta Dayfoot, Persephone, his large extended family, and the even larger Farrow family he married into.
Mr. Bob Tiessen,ÌýBMath ’74
Bob Tiessen died peacefully at Hospice À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Region on Monday, May 23, 2022, at the age of 71. Kevin was passionate about helping others. He was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. This was evident by his involvement with the Search and Rescue community where he was a role model to members, both new and seasoned. He was also integral in the development and advancement of Search and Rescue programs.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lynda Marie Schultz at the age of 65 at her home in Burlington, Ontario. Lynda was born in Fort Erie, Ontario and raised in Ridgeway. After graduating from Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School, she attended the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ where she earned a Bachelor of Math degree with a speciality in accounting and ultimately earning her CPA, CMA.
Mr. Stew Hamilton, BMath ’86
On Thursday, March 31, 2022,ÌýStewart Hamilton left this world peacefully in his sleep to be with God. At the young age of 59, it was sudden for the family, but Stew’s compassion and humour in life assured that, at his passing, his family was well taken care of by all of his relatives and friends. Stewart was an accomplished student and athlete in high schoolÌýand built a successful career after graduating from the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ and attaining CPA, CMA designations.
