SUMMARY:Making it Work: Collaboration in Bioarchaeology

DESCRIPTION:Summary \n\nAs a bioarchaeologist who works with human remains 
 from archaeological\nsites in order to reconstruct the lives of past peopl
 es my research\nrevolves around collaboration.  Using my current research
  at an Early\nBronze Age site in southern Jordan (Wadi Faynan 100) as a ca
 se study\,\nI will explore what it means to be a researcher aiming to do 
 ‘good\nscience’\, while also doing ‘science for good’.  Working w
 ith\nthe dead requires strong relationships with\, and sensitivities to\, 
 not\nonly your colleagues and national governments\, but to the local\ncom
 munities without whom you could not do your work at all.   One of\nmy ma
 jor research projects is examining the impacts of toxic trace\nmetals on c
 hildhood health and development due to the development of\nmetallurgy duri
 ng the Early Bronze Age.  This work exists in a sphere\nof interest and a
 nxieties felt well beyond the academy. \nAcknowledging the complexities o
 f interests and anxieties can provide\nvaluable insights for anyone who ai
 ms to do collaborative work across\ndisciplinary boundaries\, in internati
 onal settings\, and with the\nconsent of various public stakeholders.  \n
