Scaling up the trapped ion quantum\ncomputing ar chitecture remains a challenge. We explore an alternative\navenue in a tra pped ion system for increasing the computational\nHilbert space other than trapping more ions\, which is by increasing\nthe qudit dimension of an io n. Our ion of choice is 137Ba+\, which has\na rich energy level structure for high-dimensional qudit encoding.\nUtilizing the additional energy stat es found in 137Ba+ also comes with\nnon-trivial complexities that require careful considerations\, which we\nhave solved and report in this work. We report on a single-shot state\nmeasurement protocol which allows qudit en coding in 137Ba+ of up to 25\nlevels\, and demonstrate state preparation a nd measurement of up to 13\nlevels\, which is unprecedented in a trapped i on system. This PhD\ndefense presentation also covers some other interesti ng topics within\nthe thesis\, which include our experimental setup\, bari um ion loading\nvia laser ablation\, and detailed studies of some experime ntal\nobservations that may not be intuitively clear.\n DTSTAMP:20250518T043224Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
