typeof="foaf:Image" />

The Faculty of Health is hosting a Blanket Exercise that is open to all Faculty of Health members.

A Blanket Exercise is an experiential teaching tool that builds awareness and understanding of our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by having participants literally walk through situations that include pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Participants are drawn into their roles by reading scrolls and carrying cards which ultimately determine their outcomes. The exercise effectively educates while increasing empathy. It reaches both the mind and the heart.

This will be an interactive session and will require approximately 50 minutes of standing. We will have accommodations available with chairs.

We require indoor footwear, slippers, or sock feet for the Blanket Exercise. No wet or dirty footwear please.

Please note that as part of this workshop a smudging ceremony will take place.

Please be aware that the session may evoke strong emotions. It will touch on difficult topics such as residential schools, disease outbreaks in communities, enfranchisement, loss of status, the 60s scoop, Indigenous children in foster care today, and missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit people.

 Registration is required and space is limited.

A light breakfast will be served to participants starting at 8:00 in HLTH EXP Second Floor Foyer. Please indicate on your registration form if you will be attending the breakfast.

Fri, 16 Dec 2022 16:22:16 +0000 Fiona McAlister 235 at /health Naloxone Training /health/events/naloxone-training Naloxone Training Fiona McAlister Fri, 12/09/2022 - 13:46

<img src="/health/sites/default/files/uploads/images/naloxone_flyer.png" width="400" height="400" alt="Learn how to save lives. You will have a chance to review your syllabus based on psychology-based research evidence, and revise it based on your knowledge of your own students. At the end of the workshop, you will know how to make your syllabus effectively communicate your belief that all students can succeed and that all students belong, that you value diversity, and that you care about students. You can choose to use this same messaging in many other venues for communication with students, including: Learn, emails, lectures or asynchronous videos, and assignment instructions.

Hundreds of instructors in Canada and the US have participated in this workshop. The vast majority report that they would recommend it to a colleague, and students' ratings of a sample of "before" and "after" syllabi show that this workshop is effective in improving syllabus messaging.

Instructors should have a syllabus from one of their courses open for their own review during the workshop.

Dr. Christine Logel is an Associate Professor of Social Development Studies at Renison University College, and Senior Director of Special Project at the Equity Accelerator.
