Title
The role of terrestrial snow in climate variability and change: insights from models and observations

Speaker
Chris Fletcher, Associate Professor

Abstract

Snow covers about 50 million km^2 (roughly 10%) of Earth's surface during northern winter. The high albedo of snowÌýrelative to snow-free ground has profound implications for the surface energy budget. The terrestrial snowpack alsoÌýprovides a major storage term that controls the seasonal cycle, and long-term trends, in the surface water budget.ÌýAnthropogenic warming of the climate system is expected to cause dramatic reductions in the extent, and amount, ofÌýterrestrial snow during the 21st century. In this talk, I will review progress over the past decade toward understanding theÌýrole of snow in climate variability and change. Specifically, I will focus on our investigations into the snow albedo feedbackÌýmechanism through a number of projects using available observational data, and new and existing archives of simulationsÌýusing earth system models. Many of these projects have been conductedÌýwith support from the Canadian Sea Ice and Snow Evolution (CanSISE) network, and if time permits I will describe some of the major contributions emerging from CanSISE. I will conclude with a discussion ofÌýongoing research in this area, and some of the remaining challenges to be addressed.
