  WITH FOOD SYSTEMS?\n\nEach year\, over 4 million Canadians develop a new 
 infection because of\nthe food they eat. Although many of these infections
  resolve without\ntreatment\, the associated costs are over $400 million a
 nnually\, and\nserious consequences such as paralysis\, miscarriage\, chro
 nic bowel\nimpacts\, and death can occur. In response\, public health has 
 evolved a\nset of activities aimed at identifying\, and where possible\npr
 eemptively intervening\, at points across the food system where the\nmicro
 organisms that cause foodborne disease could be introduced or\nmultiply wi
 thin food products.\n
