 ned 60.  Plasticity in body and persona\nallowed the Mattel toy company t
 o position and reposition their\nhigh-achieving money-maker as relevant by
  exploiting social trend\,\npolitical movements and historical shifts. As 
 a complex international\ncelebrity and feminist bête noir\, Barbie is a m
 irror helping us to\nreflect on ourselves. \n\nThis lecture is based on m
 y book\, Plastic’s Republic\, a poem\ncollection centering on the Barbie
  doll as an enduring cultural icon.\nI will examine her creation\, her imp
 act on female beauty and discuss\nhow her mouldable nature made her a “c
 apital doll” and free market\ndiva. Following the book’s themes\, I wi
 ll elaborate the\nphilosophical\, feminist and social issues she engenders
  and discuss\nhow Barbie became plastic surgery’s prophet by spawning 
 “plastic\npositive” humans. Finally\, plastic’s reach extends to the
 \ndollification of romantic relationships via silicone sex dolls and\nends
  (un)naturally in our plastic infused lives and smothered oceans.\n\nI wil
 l follow the lecture by reading from Plastic’s Republic.\n
