To harness this potential, we have established a "supramolecular cell engineering" approach to targeted therapy. This technique uses non-covalent chemistry to self-assemble nanomedicines and biomaterials directly onto or inside cells. By functionally engineering the surface or interior of cells—such as leveraging the inflammatory tropism of immune cells—we create emerging targeted cell therapeutics. We have demonstrated that these engineered cells can deliver therapeutics with high efficiency to diseased tissues, treating inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease, and solid tumors. This supramolecular cell engineering strategy opens a new frontier in cell-based therapeutics, and we are just beginning to explore its vast potential.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="uw-text-align--left block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockuw-cbl-copy-text"> <h2 class="block-title">About the Speaker</h2> <div class="uw-copy-text"> <div class="uw-copy-text__wrapper "> <p>Prof. Ruibing Wang is a Full Professor of Supramolecular Biomaterials at the University of Macau. In the wake of these events, when there is significant state negligence, residents and community leaders often become the first responders to secure essential resources, such as water. In this presentation, I examine household responses to water insecurity and community-based water governance in Puerto Rico after Hurricane María. Here, I focus on both residents’ experiences and how community-managed aqueduct systems restored water access amid severe disruptions. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, participant observations, and interviews with residents, community water managers, and water decision makers, the findings emphasize the importance of incorporating culturally relevant strategies and community governance into broader efforts for water security and resilience in disaster-prone areas. The findings of this research emphasize pathways to operationalize resilience and improve community well-being for future events.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </section> Tue, 14 Oct 2025 14:44:07 +0000 Engineering Advancement Coop 6957 at /engineering Recent trends in groundwater use in South Asia: The role of technology and water-energy-food-poverty nexus tradeoffs /engineering/events/recent-trends-groundwater-use-south-asia-role-technology-and <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Recent trends in groundwater use in South Asia: The role of technology and water-energy-food-poverty nexus tradeoffs</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/engineering/users/engavco1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="engavco1" xml:lang="">Engineering Ad…</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 09/15/2025 - 09:25</span> <section class="uw-contained-width uw-section-spacing--default uw-section-separator--none uw-column-separator--none layout layout--uw-1-col"><div class="layout__region layout__region--first"> <div class="block block-uw-custom-blocks block-uw-cbl-image"> <div class="uw-image"> <figure class="uw-image__figure uw-image__full-width"><picture class="uw-picture"><!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_media_x_large/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=OcianCPN 1x" media="all and (min-width: 63.19em)" type="image/png"></source><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_media_large/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=XCGYFUfT 1x" media="all and (min-width: 49.81em)" type="image/png"></source><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_media_medium/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=JUYgCfdt 1x" media="all and (min-width: 30em)" type="image/png"></source><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_media_small/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=i8CHWVpV 1x" media="all and (min-width: 25em)" type="image/png"></source><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_media_x_small/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=eFC0lQSZ 1x" media="all and (min-width: 15em)" type="image/png"></source><source srcset="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/uw_is_portrait/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=7nP3wkND 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1em)" type="image/png"></source><!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--><img class="uw-picture__fallback" src="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/uploads/images/digital-screen-sb-2025-b-sm.png?itok=mGwKZlCd" alt="September WaterTalk" /></picture></figure></div> </div> </div> </section><section class="uw-contained-width uw-section-spacing--default uw-section-separator--none uw-column-separator--none layout layout--uw-1-col"><div class="layout__region layout__region--first"> <div class="uw-text-align--left block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockuw-cbl-copy-text"> <div class="uw-copy-text"> <div class="uw-copy-text__wrapper "> <p>As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Soumya Balasubramanya, Senior Economist at The World Bank, Washington, DC, will present "Recent trends in groundwater use in South Asia: The role of technology and water-energy-food-poverty nexus tradeoffs."<br /><br /> This event is in person in DC 1304 with a networking reception to follow in<br /> DC 1301 (The Fishbowl).</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </section> Mon, 15 Sep 2025 13:25:13 +0000 Engineering Advancement Coop 6927 at /engineering Workshop: “Working the Room” with Ron Ojanpera (BASc 1969) /engineering/events/workshop-working-room-ron-ojanpera-27Oct2025 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Workshop: “Working the Room” with Ron Ojanpera (BASc 1969)</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/engineering/users/mbrestov" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="mbrestov" xml:lang="">Gosia Brestova…</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Thu, 09/04/2025 - 15:07</span> <section class="uw-section-spacing--default uw-section-separator--none uw-column-separator--none layout layout--uw-1-col uw-contained-width"><div class="layout__region layout__region--first"> <div class="uw-text-align--left block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockuw-cbl-copy-text"> <div class="uw-copy-text"> <div class="uw-copy-text__wrapper "> <p><span><span><span>ݮƵ Engineering students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive in-person workshop with ݮƵ Engineering alumnus Ron Ojanpera (BASc 1969, mechanical engineering).
