Abstract

Cells, as the fundamental units of life, represent powerful and naturally optimized drugs or drug delivery vehicles. To harness this potential, we have established a "supramolecular cell engineering" approach to targeted therapy. This technique uses non-covalent chemistry to self-assemble nanomedicines and biomaterials directly onto or inside cells. By functionally engineering the surface or interior of cells—such as leveraging the inflammatory tropism of immune cells—we create emerging targeted cell therapeutics. We have demonstrated that these engineered cells can deliver therapeutics with high efficiency to diseased tissues, treating inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease, and solid tumors. This supramolecular cell engineering strategy opens a new frontier in cell-based therapeutics, and we are just beginning to explore its vast potential.

About the Speaker

Prof. Ruibing Wang is a Full Professor of Supramolecular Biomaterials at the University of Macau. He earned his BSc from Jilin University and his PhD from Queen’s University. His research focuses on supramolecular biomaterials, cell-mimetics, and cell-based therapeutics. With over 270 publications in prestigious journals such as Matter, Nat. Commun., Sci. Adv., JACS, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed, and Adv. Mater. his work has garnered over 14,350 citations and an H-index of 68 (Google Scholar). As a recipient of multiple Macau Science and Technology Awards and Teaching Excellence Award, he is consistently ranked among Stanford's World's Top 2% Scientists. Prof. Wang also serves as an international grant examiner for multiple national funding agencies, and an Associate Editor for ACS Applied Bio Materials and Chinese Chemical Letters.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Dr. Anaís Delilah Roque, John Hope Franklin Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice, Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University, will present Beyond the Storm: Water Insecurity and Community Resilience in Puerto Rico.

This event is in person in DC 1302 with a networking lunch reception to

Natural hazards and disasters can cause an array of water-related problems. In the wake of these events, when there is significant state negligence, residents and community leaders often become the first responders to secure essential resources, such as water. In this presentation, I examine household responses to water insecurity and community-based water governance in Puerto Rico after Hurricane María. Here, I focus on both residents’ experiences and how community-managed aqueduct systems restored water access amid severe disruptions. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, participant observations, and interviews with residents, community water managers, and water decision makers, the findings emphasize the importance of incorporating culturally relevant strategies and community governance into broader efforts for water security and resilience in disaster-prone areas. The findings of this research emphasize pathways to operationalize resilience and improve community well-being for future events.

��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive in-person workshop with ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering alumnus Ron Ojanpera (BASc 1969, mechanical engineering). The “Working the Room” workshop is based on 50 years of Ron’s personal business experience.

During this practical workshop, Ron Ojanpera will walk you through the basics and intricacies of networking during an event such as a reception or dinner. Ron’s tips and techniques will help build your confidence in meeting new people, particularly at larger reception and social events. The workshop will cover topics such as evaluating why to attend a particular event, how to prepare for the event, purpose of name badges, how to find opportunities and strategies on how and when to network with others, how long each engagement should be to respect people’s time, how to gracefully disengage (which is often difficult for many), and strategies of networking at a lunch or dinner where everyone is seated. There will also be an opportunity to practice these newly learned strategies with other attendees and to ask your most pressing networking strategy questions. You'll also hear a real-world testimonial from Caitlyn Luck (third-year biomedical science student) about her recent networking experience and how it opened doors for her to pursue her academic and research goals.

Biography
Ron Ojanpera graduated in 1969 from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ in mechanical engineering. He worked for 50 years in several roles starting with field service engineering, design engineering, engineering management, project management including 30 years in sales management/business development functions for a major supplier of air emission control and steam generation systems for large global customers in heavy industry. Customers were typically in thermal power generation, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical operations, pulp and paper, cement and lime production. Clients were spread across Canada plus several globally, primarily in the Andes section of South America.

Ron has presented technical papers at several major conferences primarily in the Power Generation and non-ferrous metallurgical sectors. Ron had been registered as a Professional Engineer in Quebec over the first several years of his career and subsequently in Ontario, finally retiring in 2018.

The presentation “Working the Room” is based on 50 years of Ron’s personal business experience.

The Microsoft Commercial Cloud is comprised of three Solution Areas - AI Business Solutions, Cloud & AI Platforms, and Security - which are the foundation of how CSA designs, delivers and goes to market across segments. Under Erin’s leadership, the Innovation and Acceleration team was formed to support customer’s AI Transformation by showcasing the end-to-end platform value of the Microsoft Commercial Cloud at locations around the world including the brand-new Experience Center One and global Innovation Hubs.

Co-Director, Canadian AI Adoption Initiative (CAIAI)

Prior to joining ��ݮ��Ƶ, Joel was an Assistant Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the George Washington University. He has also been a business consultant to financial services firms in Asia, Australia, and North America. His consulting engagements included reorganizing the activities of a major bank and formulating the strategy for a $US 100M startup.

Professor Blit regularly advises policymakers on innovation policy. As part of an expert roundtable, he advised the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Canada’s optimal position on intellectual property for USMCA trade negotiations. On the topic of automation and the future of work, he has briefed the G7 Representatives and has been an invited speaker at a number of venues including the OECD Global Forum on Productivity.

Joel’s main research interests are in the economics of innovation and innovation policy. He studies the role that multi-location firms play in promoting the flow of knowledge across geographical space, the effect that intellectual property rights (patents) have on innovation, and whether skilled immigration can be leveraged to foster innovation. His most recent research focuses on AI and economics. His most recent work, examining how COVID-19 is transforming the economy through automation and reallocation, featured in numerous media outlets including The Economist, The Globe and Mail, and the CBC.

Joel has received numerous research grants from agencies such as SSHRC, NBER, CIBER, INET, CIGI, the UW AI Institute.

Sheldon Fernandez is a seasoned executive, strategist and respected thought leader in the entrepreneurial and academic communities. Prior to that, Sheldon co-founded Infusion, a leading technology and consultancy firm, and helped grow the company to 700 people before its acquisition by Avanade.

At present, Sheldon is advising enterprises, startups, PE firms and VCs, on transformational opportunities around AI, and maintains advisory positions with the Montreal Institute for Global Security (MIGS) and the CleanAI initiative. Sirisha Rambhatla, PhD, is the Director of the Critical Machine Learning (ML) Lab (https://sirisharambhatla.com/criticalml/) and an Assistant Professor in the Management Science and Engineering Department at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ (UW) with cross-appointments in Systems Design Engineering and the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. Her research focuses on developing reliable ML and artificial intelligence (AI) models for critical real-world decision-making in surgery, transplantation and healthcare, intelligent manufacturing, and aviation using computer vision, spatiotemporal modelling, representation learning, and explainable AI. Her inter-disciplinary work, spanning both the theory and practice of ML, has been published at top ML venues such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, KDD, IJCAI, AAAI, and clinical venues such as AMIA, Urology Clinics North America, Surgery, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Performance Award by University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, 2021 Merit Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research at the University of Southern California, Dr. Rambhatla received her Ph.D. and Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities in 2019 and 2012, respectively, where she was the recipient of the E. Ranovus is headquartered in Kanata, Ontario, Canada with European R&D center in Nuremberg, Germany, and business development presence in Sunnyvale CA USA.

Prior to RANOVUS, Mr. Arabzadeh was the Chairman and CEO of CoreOptics, an innovative provider of photonic subsystems for high-capacity networking applications based in Nuremberg Germany, before being acquired by Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) in 2010. Formerly, Mr. Arabzadeh held various senior management positions at Nortel Networks in Brazil, Mexico, England, and USA. Mr. Arabzadeh’s last role at Nortel Networks was VP & GM of Metro Optical business unit. Prior to joining Nortel, Mr. Arabzadeh was the President of UNICAD information systems, a custom CAD/CAM software development company in Montreal, Canada.

Stephanie Hazlewood
Distinguished Engineer, Chief Data Office
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)

Stephanie Hazlewood is an RBC Distinguished Engineer with the Chief Data Office at the Royal Bank of Canada. In this role, she drives enterprise data management and governance products, advising and enabling RBC business and technology teams to accelerate data & AI solution delivery with security and privacy by design and default. Stephanie is a recognized technical expert in the areas of data privacy, master data management, and security automation orchestration and response technologies.

Prior to joining RBC, Stephanie was an IBM Distinguished Engineer for IBM Security where she was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Data Privacy and Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR) technologies. She has been a trusted advisor to several Fortune 100 financial, health care and telecommunications institutions throughout her career.

She is a member of the RBC FinSec Incubator advisory board, a partnership with Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst at the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), an initiative to empower early-stage companies by enhancing product security and resilience.

Stephanie is an active member of the IEEE Standards Association Synthetic Data Industry Connections Expert Group, and was appointed to the NSERC-CSE (Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada – Communications Security Establishment (NSERC-CSE) evaluation committee for projects focused on robust, secure and safe AI for Canada.

Professor Ashley Mehlenbacher

Professor Ashley Rose Mehlenbacher is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Science, Health, and Technology Communication in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. She is also the inaugural Co-Director, with Donna Strickland, for the Trust in Research Undertaken in Science and Technology (TRuST) network.

Professor Mehlenbacher’s research investigates how genres of scientific and science communications emerge and evolve, how aspects of expertise and ethos interact and relate to trust in scientific and technical domains, and the ethical aspects of specialist/non-specialist relationality in the communication of complex information.

Professor Mehlenbacher is the author of On Expertise: Cultivating Character, Goodwill, and Practical Wisdom (Penn State University Press, 2022), Science Communication Online: Engaging Experts and Publics on the Internet (The Ohio State University Press, 2019), and co-editor, with Carolyn R. Miller, of Emerging Genres in New Media Environments (Palgrave, 2017).

Molly Thomas
Host, Big [If True]

Molly Thomas is the Host of TVO’s newest show, Big [If True] which exposes misinformation and disinformation in everyday life. An award-winning Anchor, Correspondent and Producer, she has worked for all three major networks in Canada.

In 2023, she received the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for her pitch on the loss of school for Afghan women and girls, which resulted in her 3-part podcast series 'Dear Taliban'. Prior, she worked as an Investigative Correspondent at CTV's flagship documentary program W5. She joined CTV National News in 2019 as a parliamentary reporter after working as a national news anchor for CTV News Channel, YOUR MORNING and the national faith-based current affairs show Context.

Molly has completed an MA in Global Affairs from the Munk School at the University of Toronto and a BA in Journalism from the University of Regina. Her commitment to social justice stories has taken her to Iraq, Somalia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Haiti, Rwanda, Uganda, France, the United States, and England. Molly has been recognized for multiple awards, including a National Labour Reporting Award (CAJ 2021), a National Award in Sports Excellence (RTDNA 2021), and a Bronze Telly Award after the 2015 Paris attacks.

Her 2022 reporting on 'Flight 752', a follow to the Iranian plane crash impacting more than a hundred Canadians, was nominated for 3 Canadian Screen awards, including 'Best News or Information Program'.

Professor Mary A. Wells
Dean, Faculty of Engineering
University of ��ݮ��Ƶ

Mary Wells is Dean of Engineering at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ (since July 1, 2020), the ninth dean since the Faculty was founded in 1957. From 2017-2020, she was Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph.

Prior to her time in Guelph, Wells was a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ for 10 years. She received awards for graduate supervision from both the Faculty and the University in 2017.

An accomplished materials engineer, Wells also served as the Associate Dean of Outreach for ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering between 2008 and 2017, and chaired its Women in Engineering committee for many years. She chaired the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering from 2013 to 2018.

Wells began her academic career as a professor in materials engineering at the University of British Columbia from 1996 to 2007, and has worked in the steel industry in Canada and internationally.

The co-author of two books including one on Canadian women innovators and the second on Canadian women in materials, her research focuses on the relationship between processing, structure and properties for advanced metallic alloys used in the transportation sector.
