Hamid Arabzadeh
Chairman & CEO
RANOVUS

Mr. Hamid Arabzadeh has been the Chairman and CEO of RANOVUS, www.ranovus.com, a leading technology provider of photonic interconnect solutions for AI/ML workloads, since its inception in 2012. Ranovus is headquartered in Kanata, Ontario, Canada with European R&D center in Nuremberg, Germany, and business development presence in Sunnyvale CA USA.

Prior to RANOVUS, Mr. Arabzadeh was the Chairman and CEO of CoreOptics, an innovative provider of photonic subsystems for high-capacity networking applications based in Nuremberg Germany, before being acquired by Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) in 2010. Formerly, Mr. Arabzadeh held various senior management positions at Nortel Networks in Brazil, Mexico, England, and USA. Mr. Arabzadeh’s last role at Nortel Networks was VP & GM of Metro Optical business unit. Prior to joining Nortel, Mr. Arabzadeh was the President of UNICAD information systems, a custom CAD/CAM software development company in Montreal, Canada.

Since his return to Canada in 2010, Mr. Arabzadeh has co-Founded several Canadian scaleups in fields of AI Sovereign Cloud, Security and Healthcare with an eye to benefit Canada in a competitive Data and IP driven global economy.

Mr. Arabzadeh holds a B.A.Sc. from University of ��ݮ��Ƶ in Electrical and Computer Engineering and an MBA from McGill University. He resides with his family in Toronto and enjoys soccer, tennis, and downhill skiing.

Stephanie Hazlewood
Distinguished Engineer, Chief Data Office
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)

Stephanie Hazlewood is an RBC Distinguished Engineer with the Chief Data Office at the Royal Bank of Canada. In this role, she drives enterprise data management and governance products, advising and enabling RBC business and technology teams to accelerate data & AI solution delivery with security and privacy by design and default. Stephanie is a recognized technical expert in the areas of data privacy, master data management, and security automation orchestration and response technologies.

Prior to joining RBC, Stephanie was an IBM Distinguished Engineer for IBM Security where she was Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Data Privacy and Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR) technologies. She has been a trusted advisor to several Fortune 100 financial, health care and telecommunications institutions throughout her career.

She is a member of the RBC FinSec Incubator advisory board, a partnership with Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst at the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), an initiative to empower early-stage companies by enhancing product security and resilience.

Stephanie is an active member of the IEEE Standards Association Synthetic Data Industry Connections Expert Group, and was appointed to the NSERC-CSE (Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada – Communications Security Establishment (NSERC-CSE) evaluation committee for projects focused on robust, secure and safe AI for Canada.

Professor Ashley Mehlenbacher
Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts
University of ��ݮ��Ƶ

Professor Ashley Rose Mehlenbacher is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Science, Health, and Technology Communication in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. She is also the inaugural Co-Director, with Donna Strickland, for the Trust in Research Undertaken in Science and Technology (TRuST) network.

Professor Mehlenbacher’s research investigates how genres of scientific and science communications emerge and evolve, how aspects of expertise and ethos interact and relate to trust in scientific and technical domains, and the ethical aspects of specialist/non-specialist relationality in the communication of complex information.

Professor Mehlenbacher is the author of On Expertise: Cultivating Character, Goodwill, and Practical Wisdom (Penn State University Press, 2022), Science Communication Online: Engaging Experts and Publics on the Internet (The Ohio State University Press, 2019), and co-editor, with Carolyn R. Miller, of Emerging Genres in New Media Environments (Palgrave, 2017).

Molly Thomas
Host, Big [If True]
TVO

Molly Thomas is the Host of TVO’s newest show, Big [If True] which exposes misinformation and disinformation in everyday life. An award-winning Anchor, Correspondent and Producer, she has worked for all three major networks in Canada.

In 2023, she received the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for her pitch on the loss of school for Afghan women and girls, which resulted in her 3-part podcast series 'Dear Taliban'. Prior, she worked as an Investigative Correspondent at CTV's flagship documentary program W5. She joined CTV National News in 2019 as a parliamentary reporter after working as a national news anchor for CTV News Channel, YOUR MORNING and the national faith-based current affairs show Context.

Molly has completed an MA in Global Affairs from the Munk School at the University of Toronto and a BA in Journalism from the University of Regina. Her commitment to social justice stories has taken her to Iraq, Somalia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Haiti, Rwanda, Uganda, France, the United States, and England. Molly has been recognized for multiple awards, including a National Labour Reporting Award (CAJ 2021), a National Award in Sports Excellence (RTDNA 2021), and a Bronze Telly Award after the 2015 Paris attacks.

Her 2022 reporting on 'Flight 752', a follow to the Iranian plane crash impacting more than a hundred Canadians, was nominated for 3 Canadian Screen awards, including 'Best News or Information Program'.

Professor Mary A. Wells
Dean, Faculty of Engineering
University of ��ݮ��Ƶ

Mary Wells is Dean of Engineering at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ (since July 1, 2020), the ninth dean since the Faculty was founded in 1957. From 2017-2020, she was Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph.

Prior to her time in Guelph, Wells was a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ for 10 years. She received awards for graduate supervision from both the Faculty and the University in 2017.

An accomplished materials engineer, Wells also served as the Associate Dean of Outreach for ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering between 2008 and 2017, and chaired its Women in Engineering committee for many years. She chaired the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering from 2013 to 2018.

Wells began her academic career as a professor in materials engineering at the University of British Columbia from 1996 to 2007, and has worked in the steel industry in Canada and internationally.

The co-author of two books including one on Canadian women innovators and the second on Canadian women in materials, her research focuses on the relationship between processing, structure and properties for advanced metallic alloys used in the transportation sector.

This year, engineers are proudly celebrating 100 years of the Iron Ring tradition — a uniquely Canadian symbol of the engineering profession’s commitment to integrity, humility, and service to the public good. For many engineers, this small ring remains a powerful reminder of the promise they made as engineers and the values they uphold in their work and communities.

The ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering Community (alumni, staff, faculty, students, and friends) are invited to a celebratory evening hosted by two alum-founded companies, Vidyard and Elora Brewing Company, for the exclusive launch of Ring Road Lager, brewed in honour of the Iron Ring centennial. Mary Wells, dean of ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering, will provide a special centennial cheers to the Iron Ring.

��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering alumnus Jim Murphy (BASc ’95, chemical engineering), chief executive officer of Elora Brewing Company, will chat briefly about his career journey from tech to craft beer and provide a tasting note about the Ring Road Lager.

Special thanks to Michael Litt (BASc '10) and Devon Galloway (BASc '10), co-founders of Vidyard, for hosting the event!

The registration fee is $20.00 per person, which includes light refreshments and the opportunity to be among the first to try Ring Road Lager.

Jim Murphy is a serial entrepreneur, software engineering leader and advocate for hand crafted, locally produced food and beverage. He graduated from ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering in 1995 and spent the next 13 years in tech hot spots from Boston and Texas to New York and the California Bay Area before returning home to Ontario. Jim's companies have spanned technical simulation software and Internet infrastructure to enterprise software and multi-sided marketplaces.

In 2016, Jim sold his company, Boltmade to Shopify to help lead Shopify's ��ݮ��Ƶ office. He and his team bolstered the explosive growth of high volume, complex merchants on Shopify e-commerce platform in the years since.

In 2015, Jim and his partners founded the Elora Brewing Company, a craft brewery in the heart of beautiful Elora, Ontario. Today, beer from Elora Brewing Company is available at LCBO stores across the province and at select bars and restaurants and of course at the brewery itself!

��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive in-person workshop with ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering alumnus Ron Ojanpera (BASc 1969, mechanical engineering). The “Working the Room” workshop is based on 50 years of Ron’s personal business experience.

During this practical workshop, Ron Ojanpera will walk you through the basics and intricacies of networking during an event such as a reception or dinner. Ron’s tips and techniques will help build your confidence in meeting new people, particularly at larger reception and social events. The workshop will cover topics such as evaluating why to attend a particular event, how to prepare for the event, purpose of name badges, how to find opportunities and strategies on how and when to network with others, how long each engagement should be to respect people’s time, how to gracefully disengage (which is often difficult for many), and strategies of networking at a lunch or dinner where everyone is seated. There will also be an opportunity to practice these newly learned strategies with other attendees and to ask your most pressing networking strategy questions.

Join engineering alumni and current engineering students for this workshop to gain access to Ron’s practical networking knowledge. Please RSVP to register for the workshop. Please bring your questions for an engaging conversation!

Biography
Ron Ojanpera graduated in 1969 from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ in mechanical engineering. He worked for 50 years in several roles starting with field service engineering, design engineering, engineering management, project management including 30 years in sales management/business development functions for a major supplier of air emission control and steam generation systems for large global customers in heavy industry. Customers were typically in thermal power generation, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical operations, pulp and paper, cement and lime production. Clients were spread across Canada plus several globally, primarily in the Andes section of South America.

Ron has presented technical papers at several major conferences primarily in the Power Generation and non-ferrous metallurgical sectors. Ron had been registered as a Professional Engineer in Quebec over the first several years of his career and subsequently in Ontario, finally retiring in 2018.

The presentation “Working the Room” is based on 50 years of Ron’s personal business experience.

Alpine Ski Club will be offering a complimentary beginner lesson for our group:

10:30 am: Complimentary Beginner group lessons (1 hour). Meet the instructors (wearing their navy blue jackets) at the top of the beginner/magic carpet area.

Private one hour lessons will be available on a first come first served basis at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Those interested in a private lesson will need to go to the lessons desk. The lessons desk is located on the ground floor of the Clubhouse inside the Programs and Events Office.

Equipment Rental

Each guest is responsible for bringing their own equipment or paying for their own rental equipment. Visit Squire John's to book your ski or snowboard equipment online. When booking equipment online, please use the date "Thursday, January 23" and the location "Alpine Ski Club" or "Friday, January, 25" and the location "Osler Bluff Ski Club" and group name "��ݮ��Ƶ Alumni" (both dates).

Rental bookings need to be completed at least 1 full day before your scheduled ski date. For example, if your ski day is on a Friday, your rentals need to be booked by midnight Wednesday. Equipment cannot be rented the day of the event if it is not reserved by the deadline. The Orchard Lodge - Our Home Base

Our home base for our ski days is The Orchard Lodge! This is where you can pick up your lift tickets, mix and mingle with classmates, warm up by the wood fireplace, access facilities, eat snacks or a meal (cash bar available), and store your gear.

The Café in the Orchard Lodge will be open all day for you to purchase breakfast, lunch and snacks at your leisure. Lunch seating times will be assigned when you arrive to avoid long lineups.

Brown Bagging is allowed in The Orchard Lodge so feel free to bring your own lunch.

Optional Lessons

Arrangements for skiing or snowboarding lessons - group or private - must be made at least 10 days in advance. Please make your lesson arrangements directly with the Snow School at Osler Bluff Ski Club at 705-445-4507 ext. 231 or email their team. Snow School hours are Wednesday through Sunday 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Please note, staff does not have access to email or voice mail on Mondays and Tuesdays as the Club is closed.

If you have never skied before, a first timers lesson is available for $25.00 at 11:00 am (one hour in length) on the Bee-Hive but pre-registration is required. If you choose to access this lesson, please contact the Snow School at Osler Bluff Ski Club at 705-445-4507 ext. 221 or email their team.

Equipment Rental

Each guest is responsible for bringing their own equipment or paying for their own rental equipment. Visit Squire John's to book your ski or snowboard equipment online. When booking equipment online, please use the date "Thursday, January 18" or "Friday, January 19", location "Osler Bluff Ski Club" and group name "University of ��ݮ��Ƶ Alumni".

Equipment rentals must be reserved by Thursday, January 4, 2024. Equipment cannot be rented the day of the event if it is not reserved by the deadline. See the equipment rental rates and information (PDF) for prices on rental packages or various pieces of equipment.

Snowshoeing

If you do not ski or snowboard, please join us for some snowshoeing! Snowshoeing is a growing sport and an excellent opportunity for non-skiing guests to enjoy the great outdoors. Snowshoeing trail maps may be picked up at the Club ticket office prior to setting out on the trail. It is strongly suggested that showshoeing participants carry a cell phone for communication while they are out on the trail. Although the snowshoe trails are not patrolled by the Club’s Ski Patrol, the trails are well marked to make certain guest safety has been considered. Please be advised that downloading passengers on the chairlifts is not permitted at any time.

The tradition continues on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm to celebrate Engineering Day with our incredible community of students, alumni, professors and staff. This year's activities will include a colour throw (wear a white t-shirt!), BBQ featuring the famous 'Boggan Burgers, free treats and refreshments including purple Koolaid as well as ice cream and coookie dough, a photo booth, The Tool and The Tool Bearers, and so much more!

Biography

Stephen Semeniw brings 35+ years international experience in sales, business development, marketing, strategy, customer service and operations, primarily with Internet, media, entertainment, and high-technology companies, in both the public and private sectors. He has worked in a wide range of corporate environments from large multinationals to public, medium- size companies and start-ups. He has lived in Canada, USA, Europe, the Middle East and India.

He has spent the last 24 years working as a management consultant engaged in executive/senior management positions and fixed term projects for a wide range mix of dozens of clients in North America and further abroad. Stephen is an 1989 UW grad (Honours BASc Electrical Engineering) and he also has a bilingual English–Spanish MBA (‘93) from IESE in Barcelona, Spain.

��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive virtual Office Hour with ��ݮ��Ƶ Engineering alumni Tom Dean (BASc '79, mechanical engineering), director of technical operations in the Department of Chemical Engineering from 2012 to 2022, to talk about successfully navigating the various steps to obtain your next full-time job in a technical field. Tom has been an engineering hiring manager for the past 35 years and has been coaching chemical engineering undergraduate students on the hiring process for the past decade, prior to retiring four months ago.

During this Office Hour, Tom will talk about the necessary switch from thinking like an engineer to that of a salesperson - to sell "The Product of You" for this process - a very important distinction, as you can't "engineer yourself into a new job". He will discuss how to craft and optimize the resume and cover letter to ensure you are granted an interview, then how to prepare and conduct yourself during the interview stages. And finally, he’ll discuss how to review and respond to the job offer, complete with negotiation criteria and methodology. The role of LinkedIn will also be discussed.

Please come to this session ready with questions about the hiring process and how to best navigate the hiring landscape. Tom with share insights "from the hiring side of the desk" as to what the resume reviewers are really seeking, and how to make the best impression during the interview process so that you stand out above all other applicants.

Biography

Tom Dean recently retired from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, but he has been a results-oriented executive leader with a solid background in engineering, management and continuous improvement of manufacturing business units with over 35 years of progressive management experience in hi-tech industries. He’s a team-builder and team-player with a proactive and creative management style.

Over his engineering career, Tom has worked at technology and innovation companies such as Babcock & Wilcox, GE Water & Process Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Barber Glass Manufacturing, 2Source Manufacturing and the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. He is a certified Six-Sigma Quality System Black Belt and an ISO-9000 Lead Auditor.
