Dr. Elizabeth Bradley is looking for a well-qualified postdoc to joinÌýherÌýinterdisciplinary team at the University ofÌýColoradoÌý²¹³ÙÌýÌýBoulder in the summer or early Fall of 2020.ÌýÌýWith her team, you will have the opportunity to analyze time-series data from several high-resolution ice cores. These cores contain detailed information about the Earth’s climateÌýÌýsystem dating back 68 thousand years and beyond. In the past few years, herÌýgroup has used information-theoretic techniques to identify anomalies in a record from AntarcticaÌýas well as extract hidden signals from it.
This is just a small scratch on the surface of what can be done with these datasets, however. ÌýTheirÌýwork involved only one of the many traces recorded in a singleÌýcore from one part of the world.Ìý Dr. Bradley would like toÌýextend this type of analysis to other traces in that core (e.g., chemicalÌýsignals that capture anthropogenic effects) and to cores from otherÌýparts of the world (e.g., to study climate teleconnections).Ìý It wouldÌýalso be interesting to confirm—or refute—theÌýpaleodata community's existing hypotheses about the relationships between the differentÌýdata traces.Ìý Of course, this field is wide open; Dr. Bradley is sure thatÌýother interesting ideas would arise fromÌýconversationsÌýwith youÌýand she willÌýencourage you to explore them.
The successful candidate will have a solid background in appliedÌýmathematics, including implementation and use of computational toolsÌýthat instantiate data-analysis algorithms.Ìý Equally important areÌýenthusiasm, good communication skills, and proven ability toÌýcollaborate across discipline boundaries and to work independently.
The position would be for a year, initially, with the possibility ofÌýrenewal ifÌýboth wish to continue working together.Ìý Starting dateÌýis flexible and salary will be competitive.Ìý Boulder is a great placeÌýto live and work, and you'd be plugging into an established, vibrantÌýcollaboration between herÌýgroup,ÌýÌý²¹³Ù theÌý, and one of the premier ice-core labs in the world.ÌýYou can visitÌýÌýfor more information,Ìýincluding whereÌýalumni are now.
To apply, please email your CV, along with a short statement about yourÌýskills and interests.
