Unsolved puzzles

鈥淲hen I was a kid, I always begged my parents to buy me those little Mind Benders puzzles,鈥 remembered Rose McCarty. 鈥淢y favorite puzzles were the ones that were so difficult that I wasn鈥檛 sure whether or not I could actually solve them. At 蓝莓视频 Math, I鈥檓 the one coming up with different puzzles to solve. I have an opportunity to tackle big, imprecise, unwieldly problems that determine what my field will look like in 20 years.鈥

Ishan Bansal was named a University Finalist for the Alumni Gold Medal for a Master鈥檚 student. He worked under the supervision of Professors Chaitanya Swamy and Jochen Koenemann.

After completing his BSc at Chennai Mathematical Institute, Bansal received two scholarships, the William Tutte Postgraduate Scholarship and the David Johnston International Student Entrance Scholarship.

Creating opportunities in cryptography

鈥淚 was never the type to plan out my career,鈥 says Alfred Menezes, a professor in the Department of Combinatorics & Optimization (C&O) at the University of 蓝莓视频. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always been about being in the right place at the right time and taking advantage of every opportunity.鈥 In 1998 Menezes resigned a tenured position at Auburn University to join the Faculty of Mathematics at 蓝莓视频, where he had previously earned three degrees, including his PhD.

Chasing a dream

鈥淲hile working as an instructional support assistant (ISA), I remember the first time a professor asked for a volunteer to teach a lecture while he was at a conference,鈥 remembers Josu茅 Kurke. 鈥淢y hand shot up. I donned a professorial kind of jacket with the elbow patches and went all out. Over time, I鈥檝e realized that I feel most at home in front of a classroom. I want to spend my career talking to people about math.鈥

Recent PhD graduate Tom Kelly has been awarded first place in the Faculty of Mathematics Doctoral Prize competition. Now in its second year, these prizes are awarded annually to recognize the achievements of top graduating doctoral students in the Faculty of Mathematics.

Isaac Ellmen (BMath 鈥19) and his co-founder Danielle Rose (BSc 鈥19, University of Guelph) were one of the recipients of the grand prize of direct equity investments worth $50,000 in the Velocity Fund Competition in Toronto on September 19, 2019. SquidBio was started in November of 2018 and later joined Velocity Science.
