This group discussion explores the nuanced interplay between pragmatism and ideal techno-economic scenarios, moving beyond theoretical modelling to consider societal acceptability. By analysing real-world implementation and pilot projects, the discussion examines carbon removal strategies in the broader context of the climate change agenda within the Sustainable Development Goals and climate targets. By addressing practical challenges and exploring strategies to increase societal uptake, participants will gain valuable insights to chart sustainable pathways towards a more inclusive and resilient future. To stimulate interesting debates, the sessions will be structured around input presentations from early career researchers and commentaries from different perspectives.

Knowledge Cumulation Needs for Managing Overshoot of the Paris Agreement

A Session featuring Dr. Tyler Felgenhauer , Burgess Langshaw Power and Dr. Vanessa Schweizer

What happens when countries fail to meet their climate targets to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius? This interactive panel will tackle the potential necessity of governing climate interventions and key governance challenges and knowledge cumulation needs in the implementation of climate interventions. Climate interventions are a group of technologies which could be used to address the ‘overshoot’ of temperature targets, atmospheric CO2 levels, and other effects of climate change. The session is intended to provide a high-level overview of the risks, co-benefits, and necessity of carbon dioxide removals (CDR) and other climate interventions as part of the climate action toolkit.
