As the negotiations have wrapped up, we look back on three significant contributions by À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Climate Institute members at COP27 including accelerating climate resilient tourism, advancing insights in climate law and governance, and launching evidence for action on peatland conservation, restoration, and management. 

From November 6-18, the world will come together in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, for the international climate change negotiations at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) annual Conference of the Parties (COP). Before the University’s COP27 delegation departs, the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Climate Institute held an in-person discussion with them to reflect on the crucial issues that need to be tackled, Canada’s role in the negotiations, and what outcomes they hope to witness and achieve.

The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ, through the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Climate Institute, is an official observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and participates in the annual Conference of the Parties (COP). This year, COP27 will take place in Egypt from November 6 to 18, 2022, and À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ will send a delegation of four outstanding candidates: Sarah Burch, Zahid Butt, Isra Saeed and Alexandra Ho.

From October 31 to November 12, the world will gather in Glasgow for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 26^th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to discuss and negotiate more ambitious action to meet the Paris Agreement commitments. On behalf of the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ community, the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (IC3) will lead a virtual delegation to COP26 to engage with governments and non-government observers from around the world. Graduate student delegate applications are now open.

Moderated by À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Professor Ian Rowlands, the discussion explored how COP fits into the global climate change governance system, and featured guest speakers who shared their own COP experiences.
