Gareth Stedman Jones, FBA - When would Capitalism end?

In recognition of Karl Marx's 200th birthday, WCGS is honoured to welcome distinguished Professor Gareth Stedman Jones for the Grimm Lecture 2018. He is Professor of the History of Ideas at Queen Mary, University of London and author of Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion (2016).

Full Title: When would Capitalism end? Marx's changing conception of the 'Critique of Political Economy'

In order to separate what is living from what is dead in Marx's theory, it is necessary to separate Marx from 'Marxism.' Throughout the 20th century, Marxism has been associated with the assumption that capitalism would necessarily end in collapse. Engels certainly believed this. But was this Marx's position? Marx's thought changed. Professor Stedman Jones examines three phases in Marx's picture of capitalism and how it might end - the period ending in the 1848 Revolutions, the period ending 1859, and the period 1864-1869. He concludes by examining Engels' editing of Marx's unfinished manuscript Capital.

Thursday 20 September 2018, 7 pm, CIGI Auditorium - The lecture will conclude with a Q&A session moderated by Doug Peers, Dean of Arts, followed by a free reception open to all.

Gareth Stedman Jones, FBA (Fellow of the British Academy), is Professor of the History of Ideas at Queen Mary University of London and Director of the Centre for History and Economics, Cambridge, and a Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University.

The 2013 Jakob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm Lecture will be given by Harvard film scholar Eric Rentschler. Professor Rentschler, who will also be receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ for his leading scholarship in film studies, will be speaking on the film The Lives of Others / Das Leben der Anderen, winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.

This lecture will be held in English.

Florian von Donnersmarck’s renowned feature The Lives of Others displays tableaux from the GDR as a heritage for postwall times. It offers post-ideological tableaux that in fact reproduce well-known Cold War panoramas. But this is just one way of looking at the lives of others and only one sort of heritage cinema. This presentation, in probing this exemplary heritage film, will reflect on the dynamics of recent German films that revisit the past and consider the rhetoric of consensus and heritage at work in these retrospective readings.
