We are excited to announce an upcoming lecture, "Transforming Public Health Communication: Evaluating the Impact of Generative AI Chatbots." This lecture will be delivered by University of ��ݮ��Ƶ Adjunct Professor and VP of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Dr. Steven Rebellato.

This online Zoom session will explore how Generative AI chatbots, like the one developed for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit in collaboration with the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, are revolutionizing public health by improving accessibility, efficiency, and service delivery.

Delve into an advanced evaluation framework assessing chatbot performance, consistency, and user experience, while addressing challenges like misinformation, adaptability, privacy and data integrity. About the Speaker

Steven Rebellato is the Vice President for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. He has his PhD in Public Health from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ.

Steven is a part-time Assistant Professor at McMaster University in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, & Impact and Adjunct Professor at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ. Steven is a Research Fellow at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health in the AMS-Fitzgerald Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence and Human-Centered Leadership. He is the Vice-Chair for the York Hills Centre for Children, Youth and Families in the Region of York.

To recognize his impact on public health and the next generation of public health leaders, Steven Rebellato received the 2024 Faculty of Health Alumni Achievement Award.

CBB is pleased to welcome University of Toronto's Associate Professor Dr. Venkat Bhat to campus on October 11, 2024 to present his research and discuss the development of his Interventional Psychiatry Program at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Abstract

The Interventional Neuropsychiatry Program at the University of Toronto has three pillars with a focus on novel and emerging treatments in the realms of: A) Pharmacology (e.g., IV ketamine, nitrous oxide, psychedelics); B) Brain stimulation (e.g., rTMS, TI, FES); C) Digital Interventions/Therapeutics. The research program aims to understand mechanisms behind treatment response with an emphasis on digital data capture accompanied by application of AI/analytics. This talk will provide an overview of research paradigms in this emerging domain with a particular emphasis on activities within the Digital Pillar which houses the Digital Interventions & Intelligence Group (DiiG).

DiiG is a multi-institutional group examining digital interventions (combinations of VR, app and wearable-based monitoring) in illness and wellness. DiiG activities include digital interventions to understand a) stress response among health care professionals, student populations/physical activity programs, workplace wellness, and other specific populations with mental illness to develop digital biomarkers; b) Remote mental health monitoring in Canada’s Arctic & North; c) International projects examining barriers/facilitators to digital implementation in health care (e.g., Canada-Brazil collaboration); d) Applications of Generative AI in mental health.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Venkat Bhat, MD, MSc, FRCPC, DABPN

Staff Psychiatrist at St Michael’s Hospital; Clinician-scientist, University of Toronto

Dr. Bhat is a staff psychiatrist at St. Michael’s Hospital and at the University Health Network. He is an Associate Professor within the Department of Psychiatry at University of Toronto. He envisioned and developed the Interventional Psychiatry Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, an interdisciplinary program which offers emerging interventions for neuropsychiatric disorders. He co-developed the multi-institutional Digital Interventions & Intelligence Group (DiiG), leads the Health Care AI/Analytics pillar within the Institute for Biomedical Science, Engineering & Technology, is a member within Faculties of Medicine & Biomedical Engineering, and within the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Science and Technology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bhat has over 130 publications and delivered over 150 presentations, his research program has been supported by principal funding bodies in Canada and US (>9M CDN as PI and 25M CDN as co-I), and he has mentored over 35 trainees across disciplines. His work has been recognized by organizations including RCPSC, AFSP, BBRF, ACNP, ASCP, APA, CPA, he is a member of the ACP and fellow of CCNP.

Abstract

This session covers the basics of Intellectual Property (IP) protection with a focus on patents.

You’ll learn about the different types of IP protection available and some of the most common pitfalls to avoid. Learn about the resources available to you at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, including the ��ݮ��Ƶ Commercialization Office (WatCo). Hear how IP is used to commercialize technology through licensing or start-up creation. Included is a brief discussion on “Are You an Inventor?”, this highlights some key points for consideration as this issue has come up when there may be a misunderstanding between Faculty and Grad Students.” Also included are some helpful tips for those interested in creating a Start-Up.

About the Speaker: Eric Luvisotto

Eric is a registered Canadian Patent Agent (2003) and a Professional Engineer, having earned his Master’s (1998) and Bachelor’s (1995) degrees in Engineering from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ.

Eric has many years of experience in the field of Intellectual Property (IP), having dedicated his career to IP in 1999. His career spans a wide variety of experiences, including working for two Canadian IP law firms, founding and running his own Start-Up company, and working “in-house” for a large automotive parts manufacturer.

In 2008, Eric accepted the position of Technology Transfer Officer with the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s ��ݮ��Ƶ Commercialization Office (WatCo). In this role he analyzes new ideas for patentability and commercial potential; he also seeks out potential receptors of these new technologies and negotiates licensing agreements with them. He is also involved with the creation of Start-Up companies when the technology merits this pathway.

Eric has been a popular guest lecturer on Intellectual Property, having created several IP presentations for faculty and students at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ including: “IP 101”, “IP Case Study”, “Copyright”, “Trademarks” and CREATE courses. He also routinely gives talks to various UW groups (including New Faculty, Post Doc’s, Grad Students, Optometry, etc.) on WatCo’s services, UW’s IP policy and IP in general.

Eric is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and is a member of their Bank of Speakers.

He is also a long standing member of the Licensing Executives Society, and past member of the Association of University Technology Managers.

The February 2021 session hosts Professor Jason Au and his work on imaging vector flow in bifurcations.

Conventional vascular ultrasound is restricted to one-dimensional blood flow information, where we can observe fluid moving either towards or away from the ultrasound probe. While colour Doppler and spectrogram information are useful to observe fluid reflux or overall disturbed blood flow, traditional methods provide limited quantifiable information about complex blood flow conditions that may be relevant for basic and clinical human physiology. In this talk, Dr. Jason Au (Assistant Professor, Department of Kinesiology, University of ��ݮ��Ƶ) will overview the latest developments in ultrasound techniques to visualize and quantify ‘complex’ blood flow information, and present initial findings from preliminary in vivo studies employing vector flow imaging techniques in the peripheral vasculature. Topics will include: a basic primer on ultrasound techniques, the oscillatory shear stress theory of vascular dysfunction, special cases of arterial bifurcations, and a discussion on upcoming opportunities to get involved in research with the above techniques.

The February 2021 session hosts Professor James Danckert and his work on boredom.

We often think of boredom as a trivial experience – part of the furniture of life. But boredom serves a functional role in our lives, one that is anything but trivial. As Tolstoy put it, boredom is “the desire for desires”. Boredom signals the need to act, to find something worth doing. When we’re bored we are in the midst of a kind of conundrum – wanting something meaningful to engage with but not wanting to do any of the options currently available to us. Being prone to the experience of boredom – feeling the state more frequently and intensely than others – is associated with a swathe of negative outcomes, from higher rates of depression and anxiety, to increased drug and alcohol use. Our lab explores boredom and boredom proneness from cognitive, genetic and neural standpoints. I will present work showing that boredom proneness is associated with poor self-control and self-regulation. So while in-the-moment feelings of boredom represent a call to action, failures to adaptively respond to that call can have serious consequences for our lives.

Yuan Fang, PhD MBA P.Eng RAC

Yuan currently serves as the Director of Design Quality at Hologic Inc., and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of several private medical device companies. Yuan worked at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for 8+ years and as the acting Branch Chief and team lead, he led multidisciplinary review teams for 150+ medical device premarket submissions (including PMA, IDE, 510(k) and 513(g)) and 100+ compliance assignments (inspections, warning letter resolutions, recalls, ARO and trade complaints). Yuan received the prestigious FDA Outstanding Service Award for his contributions and expertise in Total Product Life Cycle (TPLC) management and the lead author on the FDA Guidance for the Submission of 510(k)s for Solid State X-ray Imaging Devices. Yuan received his PhD majoring in Electrical Engineering from the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, MBA from Ivey Business School - Western University and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the province of Ontario.

After years of training and preparation for independent research, early career researchers nonetheless encounter a fair degree of uncertainty in preparation for life after training. Do our predoctoral and post-doctoral training programs truly prepare us for what lies ahead? Do I have the ability to “make it” in the academic world? Where should I focus my attention if I want to pursue an academic career? The purpose of this workshop is to demystify several core issues that likely play key roles in the uncertainties you have about life as an academic.

Bio

Andres De Los Reyes received his Ph.D. in 2008 from Yale University. He began his career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland at College Park. Within 10 years, he was promoted up the ranks to Full Professor with tenure. He serves as Director of the Comprehensive Assessment and Intervention Program, where he has provided research training to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. As part of his work on research training, he is the author of The Early Career Researcher’s Toolbox, where he reveals concrete strategies for building a research program and launching an academic career. The key goal of his research program is to improve our understanding of the inconsistent outcomes that commonly arise from multi-informant mental health assessments. Dr. De Los Reyes has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles on these and other topics, in such journals as the Psychological Bulletin, Psychological Review, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Assessment, and Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. He has received over $1.5 million in funding for his work from the Institute of Education Sciences, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. His service record reveals his passion for education and professional development. In 2019, Dr. De Los Reyes served as Chair of the Board of Educational Affairs of the American Psychological Association, Psychology’s largest organization with over 100,000 members. He serves as Editor for the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (JCCAP) (2017-2025), a top-tier journal with subscriptions at institutions in over 30 countries. He also founded and serves as Program Chair for the Future Directions Forum. This annual event offers professional development workshops and small-group and one-on-one consultations on all aspects of scholarly work. He has received a number of honors for his work, including the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology, as well as Fellow status at both the American Psychological Association and Association for Psychological Science. During the 2020-2021 academic year, he will serve as the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Mental Health at the University of Regina.
