Kitchener-based company drives the region’s economic growth with breakthrough technology that helps scientists get to discoveries faster

University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ alumnus Ryan Denomme founded Nicoya Lifesciences to tackle a major challenge in drug discovery: the high cost and complexity of traditional SPR systems. With support from Velocity, Nicoya developed affordable, high-throughput tools that help researchers assess the stability, structure, and function of biologics—critical for accelerating therapeutic development. Headquartered in Kitchener, Nicoya now employs nearly 100 people and operates in over 40 countries, drawing heavily on À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµâ€™s talent pipeline. Co-op students and alumni play central roles in the company’s innovation and growth. Nicoya’s flagship products include OpenSPR-XT and Altoâ„¢, the first digital microfluidics-based SPR system. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its global reach and integrate AI-powered data analysis to further accelerate breakthroughs in drug development—enhancing human health through faster, smarter discovery.
